Dolby Vision 2 HDR Uncertainty for 4K Blu-ray and Projectors

At IFA 2025, Dolby unveiled its latest advancements in visual technology with the introduction of Dolby Vision 2 and Dolby Vision 2 Max. While the focus was primarily on television support, questions arose regarding compatibility with other devices such as projectors and 4K Blu-ray players. Dolby’s representatives hinted at future developments but remained vague about specific plans, leaving enthusiasts eager for more information.

Future Compatibility Beyond TVs

Dolbyโ€™s Senior Product Manager for Home Entertainment, Aaron Dew, addressed inquiries about the potential for Dolby Vision 2 to extend beyond televisions. He acknowledged the existence of various display types and teased that more details would emerge in the future. Dew emphasized that the current discussion centers on TVs, but his comments suggested that other devices might soon follow. This has sparked curiosity among consumers, particularly those who own projectors and smartphones that already support original Dolby Vision technology.

Projectors and Their Potential

The outlook for projectors appears promising as they increasingly adopt technology similar to that of modern televisions. As projectors evolve, they are beginning to utilize the same processing chips that enable Dolby Vision capabilities. This trend could facilitate the integration of Dolby Vision 2 through new MediaTek chips designed for enhanced performance. Although the adoption rate may lag behind that of televisions, the potential for projectors to deliver impressive results with Dolby Vision 2 is encouraging, especially in scenarios where brightness is limited.

The Challenge with 4K Blu-ray Players

The situation with 4K Blu-ray players is more complex. The market has seen a scarcity of new models, with only a few releases this year, including a Sony model that lacks significant upgrades and a couple of high-end options from Magnetar aimed at audiophiles. The Panasonic DP-UB820, a highly rated player, has been in the market for seven years, raising concerns about whether existing players will support Dolby Vision 2. The key question remains whether Dolby can convince manufacturers to update their devices to accommodate the new technology, especially as consumer interest in 4K Blu-ray continues.

Looking Ahead to Future Developments

While optimism about widespread adoption of Dolby Vision 2 Max among videophiles exists, the timeline for updates remains uncertain. Features like Authentic Motion and bi-directional tone-mapping are particularly appealing for high-end televisions, which could drive interest in 4K Blu-ray formats. However, it seems unlikely that significant announcements will occur this year. Industry insiders speculate that the next major opportunity for Dolby to share updates on Dolby Vision 2 will be at CES 2026, where further details about supported devices and potential partnerships, such as with LG, may be revealed.
