DGCA Audit Reveals 263 Compliance Lapses Across Eight Airlines in One Year

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has reported a total of 263 audit findings across eight airlines over the past year, highlighting safety and compliance issues within the industry. Among the major airlines, Air India recorded the highest number of findings at 51, followed by Air India Express with 25 and IndiGo with 23. The DGCA emphasized that a higher number of findings is typical for airlines with extensive operations, reflecting the complexity of their activities rather than indicating unusual lapses.
Audit Findings Overview
The DGCA’s recent audit revealed a significant number of compliance issues, categorized into two levels. Out of the 263 findings, 19 were classified as level one, indicating serious lapses that require immediate attention. These significant findings were noted at erstwhile Vistara, Air India, and Air India Express. The remaining 244 findings were categorized as level two, which includes other non-compliances. Notably, Alliance Airlines, a smaller state-owned carrier with a limited fleet, led with 57 findings. This data underscores the ongoing challenges faced by airlines in maintaining safety and compliance standards.
Air Indiaโs Safety Violations
A recent audit of Air India conducted between July 1 and July 4 uncovered approximately 100 safety violations. Among these, seven were deemed significant breaches, necessitating corrective actions by July 30. Additionally, 44 other non-compliance issues must be addressed by August 23. In response to the audit, Air India stated that it was fully transparent during the evaluation process and committed to providing the DGCA with detailed reports on corrective actions taken within the specified timeframe.
DGCAโs Oversight Responsibilities
The DGCA conducts regular audits as part of its commitment to ensuring aviation safety and compliance with international standards. These audits are aligned with the requirements set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and are essential for enhancing operational safety across the airline industry. The DGCA noted that the findings from these audits serve to identify areas needing improvement, which is crucial for the continuous enhancement of safety measures. Each airline is formally notified upon the completion of an audit and is required to submit timely compliance reports, which the DGCA closely monitors.
Importance of Compliance in Aviation
The DGCA’s findings reflect the complexities involved in managing large-scale airline operations. The agency reassured the public that a higher number of audit findings is common among major carriers due to the scale of their activities. This pattern is not unique to India, as global aviation regulators often encounter similar situations with large airlines. The DGCA’s proactive approach to oversight aims to ensure that all necessary measures are implemented to uphold and improve safety standards within the aviation sector.
