Gajendra Singh Shekhawat: The Gita has been relevant for 5,000 years

The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is currently hosting a two-day national symposium to celebrate the recent inscription of the Bhagavad Gita and Bharatamuniโ€™s Natyashastra in the UNESCO Memory of the World International Register. The inaugural session took place on July 30 at the Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi, under the theme โ€œTimeless Texts and Universal Teachings.โ€ This significant event aims to highlight the global importance and enduring relevance of these foundational Indian texts.

Inaugural Session Highlights

The symposium commenced with an inaugural session attended by notable figures, including the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who served as the Chief Guest. The session was presided over by Padma Bhushan Shri Ram Bahadur Rai, President of the IGNCA Trust. Guests of Honour included Swami Gyananand Ji Maharaj, founder of the G.I.E.O. Gita and Gita Gyan Sansthanam, and Padma Vibhushan Dr. Sonal Mansingh, a former Member of Parliament. Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of IGNCA, delivered the inaugural address, while Prof. (Dr.) Ramesh Chandra Gaur provided a welcome address and introduced the guests. The IGNCA played a pivotal role in securing the inclusion of the Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra in the UNESCO Memory of the World International Register, marking a significant achievement for Indian cultural heritage.

Significance of the Texts

In his address, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat emphasized the historical significance of the Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra, noting their ancient origins of over 5,000 and 2,500 years, respectively. He remarked on India’s cultural advancements during those times, contrasting them with the modern global landscape. Shekhawat highlighted the Gita’s universal teachings, stating that its recognition by UNESCO is essential for fostering pride in India’s rich heritage among younger generations. He expressed hope that this acknowledgment would encourage a reconnection with India’s cultural roots, which have often been overshadowed by colonial perspectives.

Reflections from Distinguished Guests

Swami Gyananand Ji Maharaj shared insights on the relevance of the Gita in today’s digital age, suggesting that its teachings can guide individuals in making balanced decisions amidst technological advancements. Dr. Sonal Mansingh drew parallels between the two texts, emphasizing their shared focus on karma yoga and the importance of action as a spiritual discipline. She noted that both the Gita and Natyashastra encourage individuals to strive for excellence while remaining connected to their spiritual roots. Shri Ram Bahadur Rai remarked that the inscription of these texts is not merely an honor but a significant cultural milestone that can guide the global community towards self-awareness and ethical living.

Future Sessions and Cultural Engagement

The symposium will continue with multiple sessions aimed at engaging scholars, cultural thinkers, and heritage professionals in discussions about the timeless wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra. The valedictory session is scheduled for July 31, 2025, at the Samvet Auditorium, where Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, will be the Chief Guest. This event aims to reaffirm the relevance of these texts in contemporary discourse and celebrate their contributions to global intellectual heritage. The symposium also features the release of a book titled โ€œFrom Manuscript to Memory,โ€ which reflects on the cultural significance of these inscriptions, alongside an exhibition showcasing rare manuscripts and historical records. The event underscores IGNCA’s commitment to preserving and promoting India’s documentary heritage for future generations.
