Awareness Program for Livestock Farmers in Western and Southern States/UTs

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) recently hosted a Virtual Awareness Program aimed at livestock farmers in Western and Southern States and Union Territories. Held on July 11, 2025, the event was led by Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, the Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying. The program attracted over 100,000 participants and focused on enhancing knowledge about animal husbandry practices, including breed improvement and disease control.

Engagement with Farmers

During the program, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel emphasized the importance of direct interaction with livestock farmers. He praised the DAHD’s initiatives to boost milk production, particularly through the use of Sex-Sorted Semen (SSS). The minister noted that the cost of SSS has significantly decreased, making it more accessible for farmers nationwide. He encouraged participants to engage actively in the session, stating that the knowledge gained could be effectively applied in their farming practices. Throughout the event, he interacted with farmers from various states, discussing their livestock management, access to veterinary services, and awareness of government schemes.

Health and Disease Control

Smt. Alka Upadhyaya, Secretary of DAHD, highlighted the critical role of timely vaccinations in maintaining livestock health and preventing disease outbreaks. She discussed zoonotic diseases, which can be transmitted from animals to humans, stressing the need for effective disease control measures. Upadhyaya also spoke about advanced breeding techniques that can enhance productivity in the livestock sector. She urged farmers to implement the knowledge acquired from the program in their daily practices, contributing to the overall advancement of animal husbandry.

Widespread Participation

The awareness program saw participation from livestock farmers across 2,000 locations in various states and Union Territories, including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The initiative aimed to educate farmers on essential aspects of animal husbandry, such as breed improvement, vaccination, zoonotic disease control, and sanitation practices. The program featured expert-led sessions and educational videos, particularly focusing on SSS and vaccination protocols. The extensive turnout of over 100,000 farmers underscores the program’s significance in promoting better practices within the livestock community.

Leveraging Digital Platforms

This initiative is part of the DAHD’s broader strategy to enhance awareness in the livestock and dairy sectors by utilizing digital platforms. By engaging directly with farmers, the department aims to improve knowledge dissemination and encourage the adoption of best practices in animal husbandry. The successful execution of this virtual program reflects the commitment of the DAHD to support the agricultural community and foster sustainable development in the livestock sector.
