Governor of South Australia Frances Adamson AC Requests Meeting with Dr. Jitendra Singh

South Australia Governor Frances Adamson AC is currently visiting India, where she met with Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh to explore opportunities for enhanced collaboration in space technology between the two nations. Their discussions included the recent launch of the Axiom-4 mission, which marked a significant milestone for India as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla joined a global crew heading to the International Space Station. Both leaders emphasized the importance of their countries’ partnership in advancing frontier technologies.

Strengthening India-Australia Space Cooperation

During her visit, Governor Adamson and Dr. Jitendra Singh reviewed the evolution of space cooperation between India and Australia. Dr. Singh highlighted the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) signed in October 2012, which laid the groundwork for collaboration. The establishment of the Australian Space Agency (ASA) in 2018 and subsequent amendments in 2021 have significantly bolstered bilateral ties in the space sector. Dr. Singh expressed gratitude for Australiaโ€™s support, particularly in advancing Indiaโ€™s Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission. He noted that recent visits by Indian technical teams to Canberra have fostered productive discussions on Crew Module Recovery operations, enhancing the momentum of their cooperation.

Innovations in Space Biotechnology

Dr. Singh also shared insights into India’s advancements in space biotechnology. He informed Governor Adamson that indigenous biotech kits, developed through a collaboration between the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and ISRO, are currently being tested aboard the International Space Station. These kits, which were carried by Astronaut Shukla, are designed to study the growth of microalgae in microgravity, a crucial factor for sustaining life during long-duration space missions. Dr. Singh emphasized the transformative potential of integrating space biology and space medicine, noting that India has made significant strides in these areas.

Public-Private Partnerships and Marine Cooperation

The discussions also touched on the growing significance of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in developing robust space ecosystems. Dr. Singh welcomed Australian interest in collaborating with Indian startups and industries, citing the ASAโ€™s International Space Investment โ€“ India Stream as a successful model of structured cooperation. He underscored that Indiaโ€™s space journey is increasingly driven by a collaborative spirit across nations and sectors, positioning Australia as a key partner.

In addition to space technology, both leaders recognized the vast marine resources shared by their nations. They deliberated on establishing an extended framework for India-Australia Marine Cooperation, aimed at promoting sustainable exploration, conservation, and innovation in ocean sciences.

Mutual Admiration and Future Collaborations

Governor Frances Adamson expressed her admiration for Indiaโ€™s achievements in space and extended her best wishes for the Gaganyaan mission and other upcoming milestones. She emphasized the importance of cultural connections and scientific collaborations in strengthening the ties between India and Australia. Adamson stated that Australia values its scientific and strategic partnership with India and looks forward to advancing joint initiatives in space, marine research, and innovation. She was accompanied by Mr. Philip Green, the Australian High Commissioner to India, during her visit.
