Pune Metro Line 2 Extension Receives Approval, Enhancing Connectivity for Local Residents

In a significant development for urban transportation, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of Pune Metro Line 2. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity in Pune, India’s ninth most populous city, with an estimated investment of โ‚น3,626 crore. The project is expected to improve public transport infrastructure and support the city’s rapid growth.

Pune Metro Line 2 Extension Details

The extension of Pune Metro Line 2 will cover two main corridors: Corridor 2A, which runs from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk, and Corridor 2B, connecting Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi. This expansion builds upon the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor from Phase 1 of the project. The new elevated corridors will stretch over 12.75 kilometers and include 13 stations, linking key suburban areas such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The construction is projected to be completed within four years.

The total estimated cost for this extension is โ‚น3,626.24 crore, with funding shared equally among the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and various external bilateral and multilateral agencies. This project aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Pune, aiming to establish a seamless metro connection from Chandani Chowk to Wagholi, thereby enhancing the city’s East-West public transport network.

Impact on Urban Connectivity

The planned metro extensions are set to connect major technology hubs, business districts, educational institutions, and residential areas, significantly boosting public transportation usage across the rail network. A key feature of the project is the District Court Interchange Station, which will facilitate connections between Line 2 and other metro lines, including Line 1 (Nigdiโ€“Katraj) and Line 3 (Hinjewadiโ€“District Court). This interchange will enhance multimodal urban connectivity, making it easier for commuters to navigate the city.

Additionally, long-distance bus services from Mumbai and Bengaluru will connect at Chandani Chowk, while services from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will interface at Wagholi. This integration will provide convenient access to Pune’s metro network, further improving the overall transportation landscape.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

The expansion of the Pune Metro is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on major roads, such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, by offering reliable, fast, and environmentally sustainable transport alternatives. The anticipated increase in daily ridership for Line 2 is projected to reach 0.96 lakh by 2027, growing to 3.49 lakh by 2057. This surge in usage underscores the importance of the metro system in meeting the transportation needs of Pune’s growing population.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will oversee the implementation of the project, managing all civil works, electro-mechanical systems, and related activities. Initial preparatory work, including topographical assessments and detailed design consultations, is already underway. The expansion plan aims to bolster Pune’s economic capabilities, enhance its urban transportation network, and promote sustainable growth throughout the metropolitan area.
