National Media Delegation Visits NIV Pune to Acknowledge Virus Research

A National Media delegation, consisting of ten members and led by Dr. Manisha Verma, Additional Director General (Media) of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, visited the Indian Council of Medical Researchโ€™s (ICMR) National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune on June 18, 2025. This visit is part of a three-day tour across Maharashtra, which will also include a stop at the ICMR-CRMCH in Chandrapur later this week. The delegation’s visit aims to highlight the significant advancements in virological research and public health initiatives in India.

Delegation Welcomed at NIV

Upon arrival, the media delegation was warmly welcomed by Dr. Naveen Kumar, the Director of NIV. Dr. Kumar provided a detailed briefing on the Institute’s state-of-the-art virological research and its essential role in managing viral outbreaks in India. He emphasized the Institute’s significant contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in isolating and studying various variants of the virus. This research has been crucial in formulating effective nationwide response strategies to combat the pandemic.

Current COVID-19 Situation

During the briefing, Dr. Kumar addressed concerns regarding a recent increase in COVID-19 cases. He reassured the media that the current situation poses no significant threat, as most patients are experiencing mild symptoms that require little to no medical intervention. This information aims to alleviate public anxiety and reinforce confidence in the ongoing management of the virus.

Response to Guillain-Barrรฉ Syndrome Outbreak

Dr. Kumar also highlighted NIV’s swift response to the Guillain-Barrรฉ Syndrome (GBS) outbreak that occurred earlier this year. He credited the Institute’s rapid diagnostics and containment strategies for effectively managing the situation. Furthermore, he announced that India is preparing to launch indigenous vaccines targeting several emerging viruses, including Mpox, Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), H5N1, and Japanese Encephalitis Virus-like particles (VLP). This initiative reflects India’s commitment to enhancing its public health infrastructure and response capabilities.

Introduction of High-Performance Computing

A significant milestone shared with the delegation was the recent commissioning of “NAKSHATRA,” India’s first High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster dedicated to virological research. Inaugurated by Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, this advanced system aims to enhance computational capabilities in virus genomics and bioinformatics. Established in 1952 with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, NIV Pune has evolved into India’s leading virus research and diagnostic center, playing a crucial role in the country’s public health defense since becoming part of ICMR in 1978.
