Indian Maritime Firms Secure Shipbuilding Contracts and Green Technology Knowledge

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, recently participated in a series of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremonies in Oslo, Norway. During this event, Indian maritime companies formed partnerships with prominent global firms, aiming to enhance collaboration and explore future business opportunities. Notably, the agreements focus on advancements in shipbuilding, offshore platforms, and sustainable maritime practices.
Key Agreements Signed in Oslo
Among the significant agreements, a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) was established between Germany’s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Rehder GmbH & Co. KG and India’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE). This MoI outlines the construction of four additional 7,500 DWT multi-purpose vessels equipped with hybrid propulsion systems, adhering to the latest cybersecurity standards. This new order complements an existing contract for eight similar vessels currently under construction at GRSEโs facility in Kolkata. Furthermore, GRSE has also signed MoUs with Aries Marine LLC from the UAE, focusing on the construction of offshore platforms and vessels, as well as with a global engine manufacturer to enhance their technological capabilities.
Collaboration with Norwegian Partners
During his visit to the Norwegian pavilion, Minister Sonowal witnessed the signing of an MoU between India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) group and Norwayโs DNV. This agreement covers a broad spectrum of collaboration areas, including shipbuilding, offshore and maritime services, port infrastructure expansion, energy systems, and sustainability initiatives. The partnership aims to leverage both nations’ strengths in maritime innovation and sustainability, reflecting a commitment to advancing the blue economy.
Minister’s Vision for Maritime Development
In his address at the event, Minister Sonowal emphasized the importance of India and Norway’s longstanding partnership in maritime affairs. He highlighted the shared values and mutual respect that underpin their collaboration, particularly in sustainable development. The minister noted that both countries, with their extensive coastlines and rich maritime traditions, recognize the need for sustainable and inclusive growth in the blue economy. He expressed optimism about the future, stating that the India-Norway Task Force on Blue Economy is pivotal for enhancing cooperation in areas such as green shipping corridors, decarbonization, and ship recycling.
Delegation of Indian Maritime Companies
Shri Sarbananda Sonowal is leading a delegation of key Indian maritime companies, including L&T Shipbuilding, Goa Shipyard Limited, and Cochin Shipyard Ltd, among others. This delegation aims to foster business relationships and explore new opportunities in the maritime sector. The minister’s participation underscores India’s commitment to modernizing its maritime infrastructure and enhancing its global presence in the industry. Through initiatives like Sagarmala, the government is focused on improving port infrastructure and promoting low-emission shipping solutions, paving the way for a sustainable maritime future.
