KVIC Observes World Bee Day 2025 with ‘Sweet Revolution Utsav’
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) marked World Bee Day 2025 with a vibrant celebration at its Central Office in Vile Parle, Mumbai. Under the theme โBee inspired by nature to nourish us all,โ the event highlighted the importance of bees in agriculture and the economy. KVIC Chairman Manoj Kumar emphasized the role of the Honey Mission in promoting self-reliance and enhancing livelihoods in rural India, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs vision for a Sweet Revolution.
Inauguration and Participation
The event commenced with an inauguration led by KVIC Chairman Manoj Kumar, accompanied by CEO Roop Rashi. The celebration attracted a diverse audience, including beekeepers from various districts in Maharashtra, trainees, scientists, and students. This gathering served as a platform for sharing knowledge and showcasing innovations in beekeeping. Participants engaged in discussions about the ecological and economic benefits of bees, reinforcing their significance in sustaining agriculture and the environment.
Significance of Bees in the Ecosystem
During his address, Manoj Kumar highlighted the critical role bees play in the ecosystem. He stated, โBees are the backbone of our ecosystem,โ noting their contributions to pollination and environmental conservation. The Honey Mission, initiated under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, has transformed honey production into a viable source of income for rural communities. Kumar reported that KVIC has distributed over 229,000 bee boxes and colonies, leading to the production of around 20,000 metric tonnes of honey, which has generated an income of โน325 crore for beekeepers.
Achievements of the Honey Mission
KVIC CEO Roop Rashi elaborated on the Honey Mission, describing it as a comprehensive livelihood model. She emphasized that thousands of youth, women, and farmers are now finding employment opportunities through this initiative. The establishment of honey processing plants, training centers, and marketing networks has made beekeeping a sustainable path to self-reliance. The event also recognized the Central Bee Research & Training Institute (CBRTI) in Pune, which has trained over 50,000 beekeepers since its inception in 1962, enhancing agricultural productivity through pollination.
Cultural Contributions and Future Prospects
The celebration included cultural performances by children, who presented plays, recited poems, and shared essays, adding a creative flair to the event. Beneficiaries from across the country shared their success stories, showcasing the positive impact of the Honey Mission. Scientists at the event emphasized the ecological importance of bees, noting that they are responsible for pollinating approximately 75% of food crops. Without bees, a significant portion of food crops and wild plant species would face serious threats. The event concluded on a high note, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees and reinforcing the mission’s commitment to promoting beekeeping as a vital economic activity in rural India.
