CSIR-IIIM Jammu Mentored Solar Mechanical Engine Receives Top Award at HonorsGradU 2025

In a remarkable achievement for Indian student innovation, Japteg Singh Bamrah, a Class 12 student from Dalhousie Public School, has been awarded the prestigious HonorsGradU 2025 Scholarship. This accolade includes the esteemed โ€œBuild a Better Futureโ€ Award for his innovative creation, the Solar Mech Engine. Mentored by Dr. Nasir Ul Rasheed, a Senior Scientist at CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM) in Jammu, Japteg emerged as one of only five global winners from thousands of entries, securing a total of $31,000 in scholarships and grants for his groundbreaking work.

Recognition and Awards

Japteg Singh Bamrah’s achievement is a significant milestone, as he is the first student from India to win the HonorsGradU Scholarship since its inception in 2012. This highly competitive scholarship, organized by the U.S.-based non-profit Honors Graduation, awards only five students worldwide each year. Japteg’s success not only highlights his exceptional talent but also serves as a source of pride for India. His project, the Solar Mech Engine, was recognized as the top technology among this year’s winners, earning him a $10,000 scholarship for his undergraduate studies in the United States and an additional $5,000 grant for further development of his invention.

Innovative Project Presentation

During the National Startup Festival held on February 22-23, 2025, at CSIR-IIIM in Jammu, Japteg presented his Solar Mech Engine to Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of Science and Technology. The event showcased India’s commitment to fostering grassroots innovation under the โ€œStart-Up India, Stand-Up Indiaโ€ initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015. Japteg’s presentation was a highlight of the festival, emphasizing the importance of supporting young innovators in their pursuit of sustainable solutions.

The Solar Mech Engine

The Solar Mech Engine, which previously won the CSIR Jigyasa Hackathon 2024, is a standalone solar thermal system that utilizes Concentrated Heat and Power (CHP) technology. It operates on the principles of cyclic air expansion and contraction, converting heat energy into mechanical energy. A standout feature of the engine is its low-resistance generator, which employs electromagnetic induction for efficient energy conversion. Its ability to function as a reversible heat pump positions it as a highly effective and sustainable energy solution, showcasing Japteg’s innovative approach to addressing energy challenges.

Future Aspirations

With a total grant of $31,000, Japteg Singh Bamrah plans to further refine his Solar Mech Engine and pursue higher education at a leading global university. His journey from a school innovator to a recognized advocate for sustainability underscores the impact of mentorship and the potential of grassroots innovation. Japteg has already received offers from over ten prestigious universities in the USA, Australia, and Canada, along with additional scholarships totaling $16,000 annually for his undergraduate studies. His accomplishments reflect a bright future ahead, not only for himself but also for the field of sustainable technology.
