Parliament Celebrates Women’s Contributions on International Women’s Day

In a heartfelt tribute during the International Women’s Day celebrations at Parliament House, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla honored the legacy of the 15 women members of the Constituent Assembly. He emphasized their pivotal role in shaping India’s democratic framework and promoting gender equality. As the nation marks 75 years of the Indian Constitution, Shri Birla called for renewed efforts to empower women and ensure their leadership in all sectors.
Honoring the Legacy of Women Leaders
Shri Birla paid homage to the inspiring vision of the women members of the Constituent Assembly, whose contributions continue to energize the nation. He highlighted that their dedication laid the groundwork for gender equality and inclusive governance in India. Reflecting on the country’s deep-rooted tradition of reverence for women, he noted that values such as motherhood, strength, and resilience are integral to society. International Women’s Day serves as a reminder to express gratitude to the ‘Matri Shakti’ for their unparalleled service to the nation.
Women Leading India’s Progress
Shri Birla emphasized the transformative role of women in India’s development, stating that they are no longer just participants but leaders across various fields, including governance, science, and entrepreneurship. He pointed out that women are now assuming significant leadership roles, from grassroots democracy to the highest levels of power. The Speaker acknowledged the remarkable strides women have made in sectors like space, defense, and education, where their contributions have been crucial to India’s achievements. He noted that the majority of elected representatives in rural local bodies are women, showcasing the growing strength of women-led development in the country.
Call for Empowerment and Education
Shri Birla expressed optimism that women would one day hold a majority in elected bodies based solely on merit. He urged policymakers to support women-led enterprises, ensuring they have access to global markets. He also stressed the urgent need to achieve 100% female literacy, asserting that education is the cornerstone of women’s empowerment. He highlighted that true gender equality cannot be realized without equal access to education and opportunities, especially for marginalized communities.
Celebrating the Nari Shakti Vandan Act
During the event, Shri Birla highlighted the historic Nari Shakti Vandan Act, describing it as a transformative reform in India’s democratic landscape. As the first law passed in the new Parliament building, it symbolizes the nation’s commitment to gender equality and enhances women’s roles in policy-making. He called for 2025 to be a landmark year for women’s self-reliance and leadership, urging all sectors of society to create an inclusive environment where women can thrive. The event concluded with the inauguration of an exhibition honoring the contributions of the women members of the Constituent Assembly, organized by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies and the National Commission for Women.
