63rd Meeting of NMCG Approves Key Projects for Environmental Flow

Under a comprehensive initiative aimed at revitalizing the Ganga and its tributaries, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) convened its 63rd Executive Committee meeting. The meeting emphasized sustainability and innovation, aligning with the mission’s core goals of enhancing water quality, managing urban water sustainably, and restoring the Ganga basin’s ecosystem. Several projects were approved, focusing on long-term improvements to ensure the safety of rivers and water bodies for future generations.
Approval of Key Projects
During the meeting, the committee approved a range of significant projects, including infrastructure developments, scientific studies, and rejuvenation plans. Among these was a sewage management project in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, with a budget of โน126.41 crore. This initiative will see the construction of 40 interception and diversion structures and 21.20 kilometers of sewer lines. Additionally, eight modern pumping stations will be established, and effective trash screens will be installed in five major drains to protect local water sources from pollution. This project adopts a Design-Build-Operate-Transfer model, ensuring a technically sound and sustainable solution for the region.
Environmental Flow Assessments
The committee also greenlit two major projects aimed at enhancing understanding of environmental flow in key river systems. The first project, โEnvironmental Flow Assessment of Kosi, Gandak, and Mahananda Rivers,โ is budgeted at approximately โน6 crore. The second project, focusing on the Ghaghara and Gomti River Basins, has an estimated cost of โน8 crore. These initiatives are expected to foster the development of sustainable and adaptive flow regimes in these rivers over the next three years, contributing to the overall health of the ecosystems.
Innovative Wastewater Treatment Solutions
Another significant approval was for a project dedicated to monitoring and creating guidelines for Johkasou technology-based and other compact plug-and-play domestic wastewater treatment solutions. This initiative aims to enhance the quality and sustainability of on-site sewage treatment across India. By focusing on innovative technologies, the project seeks to address the pressing issue of wastewater management in urban areas, ensuring cleaner and safer environments.
Conservation Efforts for Wetlands
The meeting also sanctioned a project for the conservation and management of the Ramsar Site โAsan Wetlandโ in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, with an allocation of โน2.47 crore over the next two years. This initiative aims to rejuvenate the biodiversity and ecological health of the wetland. It will involve developing a wetland inventory, assessment, and monitoring systems, along with planning conservation measures to protect this vital ecosystem.
The NMCG meeting marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to clean and preserve the Ganga and its tributaries. With participation from key officials, the meeting underscored the importance of integrating traditional practices with modern technology to foster sustainable development and public engagement in environmental conservation.
