Elena Cornaro Piscopia (5 June 1646 – 26 July 1684) also known in English as Helen Cornaro, was a Venetian philosopher of noble descent who in 1678 became one of the first women to receive an academic degree from a university, and the first to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Life and Career

Elena Cornaro Piscopia was born on June 5, 1646, in Venice, Italy. She grew up in a noble and intellectual family, which fostered her love for learning and education. From an early age, Elena showed exceptional intellectual abilities and a keen interest in mathematics and philosophy.

Elena’s academic journey began at the University of Padua, where she pursued a wide range of subjects, including languages, mathematics, philosophy, and theology. Her proficiency in various fields impressed her professors, and she quickly became renowned for her scholarship.
