This date was chosen to commemorate the day in 1948 when the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), began its operations in the Middle East. The United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 57/129 and finalized 29th May for observing the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
