Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar (27 August 1922 – 24 August 2004) was a renowned Colombian painter and sculptor who played a pioneering role in the development of abstract, minimalist, and Constructivist art in Colombia and across Latin America.

Early Life and Education

Born on August 27, 1922, in Pamplona, Colombia, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar was the youngest of eleven children to Adela Villamizar and Jesús Ramírez Castro. His father, a jeweler, introduced him to the world of visual art through experiences in his studio. In 1929, due to economic hardships caused by the Great Depression, his family relocated to Cúcuta in search of better opportunities.

In 1940, Ramírez Villamizar moved to Bogotá to study architecture at the National University of Colombia. However, his artistic focus shifted towards painting in 1944. An important turning point occurred in 1947 when he spent several months working with sculptor Édgar Negret in Popayán, an experience that exposed him to European avant-garde art through Negret’s connections, particularly with Basque artist Jorge Oteiza. This exposure significantly influenced Ramírez Villamizar’s artistic style in the subsequent years.

Career

Inspired by a visit to Machu Picchu in Peru, Ramírez Villamizar drew inspiration from Inca culture and incorporated Constructivist principles into his art.

Later Years and Death

Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar passed away in Bogotá on August 23, 2004, at the age of 81.

Awards and Recognition

Ramírez Villamizar received the Order of Boyacá in 1978, which is the highest peacetime decoration bestowed by the Colombian government. The subsequent year, he was honored with the Medal of ColCultura and the José Eusebio Caro Medal, the latter being presented by the departmental government of Norte de Santander, his birthplace. These awards underscore the significant impact of his contributions to Colombian art and culture.

On 27 August 2019, a Google Doodle was created to celebrate Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar’s 97th Birthday.
