World Asthma Day

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects the airways, causing inflammation and narrowing of the passages that carry air to and from the lungs. This condition results in symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It can vary in severity from person to person, and while it cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed with proper medical care and lifestyle adjustments. World Asthma Day is observed on May 2 this year.

World Asthma Day 2023: Theme

“Asthma Care for All” will be the theme of the 2023 World Asthma Day, according to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). All countries with adequate resources are encouraged to develop and implement asthma management plans.

World Asthma Day: History

The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) first established World Asthma Day in 1998 as “World Asthma Awareness Day”. More than 35 countries around the world celebrated it on the first Tuesday of June. It was designed to raise awareness about asthma and its impact on individuals and communities, as well as to promote better asthma management and care.

GINA organized its first global event for World Asthma Awareness Day in 2002 in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organizations. In this event, healthcare professionals, patients, and asthma advocates from around the world shared information and best practices related to asthma management and care, marking a significant milestone in the history of World Asthma Day.

Asthma Day was renamed “World Asthma Day” in 2008 and moved to the first Tuesday of May. This change was made in order to align the event with other global health awareness days and to reach a broader audience. Each year, World Asthma Day is celebrated on the first Tuesday of May, with a different theme focusing on different aspects of asthma management.
