Vice President Dhankhar Talks About India’s Constitution and Reservations

Today, the Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, shared his deep concerns about certain issues in India. He was speaking at the opening of the Samvidhan Mandir at the Elphinstone Technical High School and Jr. College in Mumbai. During his speech, he talked about how some people in power were against Baba Saheb Ambedkar and reservations, and how they are now trying to end reservations for certain groups in India.

He also spoke about the Constitution of India and why it is important to understand and respect it. He said that showing the Constitution as just a book is not enough. Instead, people should read it, understand it, and live by its values.

Reservations and Prejudice

Shri Dhankhar pointed out that the same mindset that delayed giving the Bharat Ratna award to Baba Saheb Ambedkar and kept the Mandal Commission report from being acted upon for 10 years is still around today. This is the mentality that is against reservations in India. He mentioned how some people, even in important government positions, are speaking against reservations while visiting other countries.

The Vice President criticized this attitude and assured everyone that reservations are a key part of India’s Constitution. He said that reservations were included to bring about social equality and help those who have been disadvantaged for many years. Reservations, according to him, are a positive action to support those who need a helping hand, and it is not about taking opportunities away from others.

Constitution and Its Importance

Vice President Dhankhar also reminded people that while we all have rights under the Constitution, we also have duties. These duties include respecting the national flag, national anthem, and the ideals of the freedom struggle. He pointed out that some people ignore these duties, especially when they travel abroad and criticize India publicly.

He highlighted the importance of the Constitution by quoting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who warned that if people put their personal interests above the country, India’s independence could be in danger again.

Emergency Period and Its Dark History

Shri Dhankhar also asked young people to remember the 21 months of the Emergency that took place in India from June 25, 1975. He called it the “darkest period” in India’s democratic history. During that time, the government, led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, imposed harsh rules, and many people were imprisoned. He said that this period should never be forgotten because it showed what happens when a government ignores the Constitution and the rights of its people.

In 2015, Constitution Day was declared to be celebrated on November 26 every year, as a reminder of how the Constitution was created and how it protects everyone’s rights. Shri Dhankhar said that the Emergency period was a time when the Constitution was ignored, and that’s why it is important to learn about it so that future generations can protect the Constitution.

Working Together for a Stronger India

The Vice President spoke about how the different branches of government, including the Judiciary, Legislature, and Executive, must work together to help India grow and flourish. He said that each branch has limits, and they should not get involved in unnecessary political debates. Instead, they should focus on making sure the Constitution works for everyone.

Shri Dhankhar also criticized some people in power who have made insensitive comments about serious issues in India, like the violence in Kolkata. He urged young people to stand against actions that hurt India and damage its values.

Shri Dhankhar’s speech was a strong message about the importance of the Constitution, reservations, and learning from history. He emphasized that all Indians, especially young people, should respect and protect the Constitution. He also reminded everyone that the rights given to us by the Constitution come with responsibilities, and we must work together to make India a stronger and more equal country.
