Urgent Call for Peace in the DRC
As tensions rise in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the situation continues to deteriorate due to the advancing 23 March Movement (M23). Senior United Nations officials have urged the warring parties to return to the negotiating table. They emphasize the need for serious efforts towards peace. Huang Xia, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region, echoed these sentiments. He warned that the risk of a broader regional conflict is more pronounced than ever. Xia called for a unified approach among states to prevent the collapse of peace efforts established over the past decade. He described the summit as a pivotal moment for fostering a regional consensus on crisis resolution.
Furthermore, Xia stressed the importance of including women and girls in peace mechanisms. He pointed out that their involvement is crucial for sustainable peace.
