UN Security Council Condemns Violence in Syria

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the escalating violence in Syria’s Latakia and Tartus provinces, which has resulted in mass killings of civilians, particularly within the Alawite community. In a unanimous presidential statement, the Council called upon interim authorities to ensure the protection of all Syrians and to cease all acts of violence. The statement also emphasized the need for unhindered humanitarian access and accountability for those responsible for the violence.

Call for Immediate Cessation of Violence

In its recent statement, the Security Council expressed grave concern over the widespread violence that has erupted in Syria since March 6. The Council condemned not only the mass killings but also attacks on civilian infrastructure. It urged all parties involved to immediately halt all violent actions and inflammatory rhetoric. The statement highlighted the importance of protecting civilian populations and infrastructure, as well as ensuring that humanitarian operations can proceed without obstruction. The Council’s call for immediate action reflects the urgent need to safeguard the lives of innocent civilians caught in the conflict.

Humanitarian Access and Support

The Security Council underscored the necessity for full, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to those affected by the violence. It called on all parties and states to facilitate humanitarian operations and to treat all individuals humanely. Additionally, the Council urged a significant increase in humanitarian support across Syria to address the dire needs of the population. This appeal comes as the humanitarian situation in the country continues to deteriorate, with many civilians facing severe shortages of food, medical supplies, and shelter.

Commitment to Justice and Reconciliation

Highlighting the importance of justice and reconciliation, the Security Council called for prompt and impartial investigations into the violence against civilians. The Council took note of the Syrian interim authorities’ announcement regarding the establishment of an independent committee to investigate these incidents and hold perpetrators accountable. Furthermore, the Council recognized the authorities’ decision to form a committee dedicated to civil peace, emphasizing the need for an inclusive political process that respects the rights of all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Respect for Syria’s Sovereignty

In its statement, the Security Council reiterated the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. It called on all states to refrain from actions that could further destabilize the country. The Council also urged the Syrian government to take decisive measures against the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters, reinforcing its obligations under relevant counter-terrorism resolutions. The emphasis on sovereignty and stability reflects the Council’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Syria.
