Twitch, the popular streaming platform favored by gamers, has been added to Australia’s upcoming social media ban targeting teenagers. This initiative, set to take effect on December 10, will prevent users under the age of 16 from creating accounts on Twitch, along with other major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. The Australian internet regulator has emphasized that the ban aims to mitigate the risks and pressures children face on social media, particularly concerning harmful content.
The Australian government has implemented a comprehensive ban on social media platforms for users under 16, with Twitch being the latest addition. Starting December 10, Twitch will not allow new accounts for users in this age group. Existing accounts belonging to under-16 users will be deactivated from January 9, 2024. Users aged 13 to the legal age of adulthood in their respective countries can join only with parental consent. Inman Grant clarified that Pinterest’s purpose does not align with the concerns that prompted the ban.
As the December 10 start date approaches, no additional platforms are expected to be added to the list. The government has expressed its commitment to reducing the risks associated with social media for children, emphasizing the importance of creating a safer online environment.
Industry Response
In response to the impending ban, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, announced plans to begin closing accounts of teenagers under 16 starting December 4, a week ahead of the official enforcement date.
