Transgender Couple’s Journey to Legal Marriage
In a groundbreaking moment for LGBTQ+ rights in India, Srija became the first transgender woman to legally marry in Tamil Nadu in 2019, following a historic court ruling. A new documentary titled “Amma’s Pride” highlights Srija’s ongoing struggle for state recognition of her marriage to Arun, alongside the unwavering support of her mother, Valli. This film not only chronicles their personal journey but also aims to challenge societal norms surrounding transgender individuals in India.
Love Against All Odds
Srija met Arun in 2017 at a temple, where they discovered they had mutual friends. Their connection blossomed quickly, leading to a deep bond as they shared their experiences and dreams. Srija, who was already transitioning, expressed her desire for legal recognition of their relationship. “We wanted legal recognition because we want a normal life like every other couple,” she stated. This recognition would provide them with essential legal protections, such as inheritance rights and the ability to make medical decisions for each other.
Despite the Indian Supreme Court’s 2014 ruling that granted transgender individuals equal rights, including marriage, the couple faced significant challenges. Their initial attempt to register their marriage in 2018 was denied, with officials citing outdated definitions of marriage. However, with the support of LGBTQ+ activists, Srija and Arun fought back, ultimately gaining recognition from the Madras High Court in 2019. This ruling was celebrated as a significant victory for transgender rights in India, positioning Srija and Arun as trailblazers in the fight for equality.
However, their newfound visibility came with its own set of challenges. Following media coverage of their marriage, Arun lost his job due to transphobia, and the couple faced online harassment. Despite these obstacles, Srija excelled academically, earning a degree in English literature, a significant achievement in her family.
A Mother’s Unwavering Support
Valli, Srija’s mother, has been a pillar of strength throughout her daughter’s journey. After Srija came out as transgender at 17, the family faced severe backlash, including eviction from their home. Many relatives distanced themselves, but Valli remained steadfast in her support. “I will always stand by my daughter,” she affirmed, emphasizing the importance of family acceptance for transgender individuals.
Valli, who became a single parent after her husband’s death, works in a school kitchen to support her family. Despite financial constraints, she sold some of her jewelry to help fund Srija’s gender reassignment surgery. “She takes good care of me,” Srija expressed, highlighting the deep bond between mother and daughter.
Changing Perceptions Through Storytelling
With an estimated two million transgender individuals in India, the community continues to face significant stigma and discrimination. While legal protections exist, many transgender people still encounter abuse and limited access to education and employment. “Not a lot of trans people in India, or even the world, have the support of their families,” noted filmmaker Shiva Krish, emphasizing the uniqueness of Srija and Valli’s story.
Srija hopes that “Amma’s Pride” will help reshape narratives surrounding transgender individuals, moving beyond stories of trauma to highlight resilience and success. “This documentary shows that we can be leaders. I am a manager, a productive member of the workforce,” she stated, expressing her desire for a future where transgender individuals are seen as equals in society.
Looking Ahead: A Family’s Dream
Following its premiere at international film festivals, “Amma’s Pride” was screened in Chennai to celebrate International Trans Day of Visibility. The event included workshops aimed at fostering connections between transgender individuals and their families, promoting acceptance and support within communities. Srija and Arun now work as managers in private companies and are considering adopting a child. “We’re hoping for a normal future,” Srija shared. Valli, beaming with pride, added, “I would like to become a grandmother soon.” Their story serves as a beacon of hope for many, illustrating the power of love and support in the face of adversity.
