Tragedy Strikes as School Collapse Leaves Dozens Feared Dead, Officials Report
There are currently no signs of life beneath the rubble of a collapsed Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, where 59 individuals remain unaccounted for. The tragic incident occurred on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least five students and injuries to around 100 others. Rescue operations have faced significant challenges due to the unstable structure of the building, which was undergoing construction at the time of the collapse.
Rescue Efforts and Challenges
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly since the collapse, managing to free 13 individuals from the debris. Unfortunately, two of those rescued later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. The head of Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, Lt Gen Suharyanto, reported that rescuers have been using thermal drones to search for signs of life but have not detected any. The situation has been complicated by the precarious state of the building, which raises concerns about further collapses during rescue operations.
On Thursday, Suharyanto stated that the team would transition to a new phase of rescue efforts, which involves using heavy machinery to remove large concrete slabs. This decision comes after initial hesitations to use such equipment due to fears of exacerbating the situation. Authorities had previously reported hearing cries and shouts from beneath the rubble, which has kept hope alive among the families of those missing.
Families Await News
As rescue operations continue, families of the missing individuals remain at the site, anxiously awaiting updates. Many are visibly distressed but cling to hope that their loved ones may still be alive. Maulana Bayu Rizky Pratama, whose 17-year-old brother is among the missing, expressed his desire for good news, stating, “I hope my brother will be found soon. I feel sad thinking of him being down there for four days.” Similarly, Ahmad Ikhsan, a father of one of the missing students, remains optimistic, saying, “I believe my son is still alive.”
The emotional toll on families is palpable, with many expressing their fears and hopes to the media. The uncertainty surrounding the rescue efforts has left them in a state of limbo, as they grapple with the possibility of loss while holding onto the hope of a miracle.
Building Collapse Details
The Islamic boarding school was in the process of undergoing construction, with two additional floors being added when it collapsed. The disaster mitigation agency later revealed that the building’s foundation was unstable and could not support the extra weight. This critical oversight has raised questions about the management of the school and the legality of the construction work being carried out.
Sidoarjo’s regent has indicated that the school’s management did not secure the necessary permits for the construction of the additional floors. This revelation has sparked discussions about building regulations and safety standards in the region, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
