Thomas Kaplan Predicts Inevitable Surge in Gold Prices, Foreseeing $50,000 an Ounce
Will gold prices reach $50,000 per ounce in the coming years? Thomas Kaplan, chairman of Electrum and a billionaire investor, believes that gold could rise as much as tenfold from its current price of around $4,600. Kaplan stated in a recent interview with Kitco News that he sees this increase as inevitable, asserting, “I can see gold going to 30, 40, 50,000 dollars without a problem.” If gold were to reach $50,000 per ounce, it would translate to approximately Rs 15 lakh per 10 grams based on current exchange rates.
Kaplan’s bullish outlook comes amid a recent correction in gold prices, which have fallen from historic highs reached earlier in 2025. This decline has led some analysts to question whether the bull run for gold has ended. However, other experts, including Robert Kiyosaki, author of “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” and Jim Rogers, remain optimistic about gold and silver’s long-term prospects, despite potential short-term fluctuations.
Gold correction a ‘1987 moment’?
Kaplan’s forecast suggests a significant potential for gold prices to soar. A tenfold increase would mean gold repeating gains that took two decades to achieve. While he did not specify a timeline for this increase, he expressed uncertainty about the current market pullback, stating, “Maybe it already is, maybe it needs to test again, I don’t know.” He views the recent decline as a correction within a broader bull market and likens it to a historical event.
Kaplan referred to the current market situation as a ‘1987 moment,’ drawing parallels to the stock market crash of that year. He believes that the recent correction presents a buying opportunity rather than a fundamental issue. Kaplan noted that the 1987 crash, which saw the Dow drop 36% in eight weeks, appeared catastrophic at the time but is hardly noticeable on a long-term chart. He emphasized that such short-term declines can be misleading when viewed in the context of long-term market trends.
