Surge in IPO Activity: Major Offerings Achieve 17x Subscription Amid Robust Liquidity

Large public issues have taken center stage in India’s primary market for 2025, showcasing a remarkable shift in investor behavior. Unlike previous cycles where substantial IPOs faced challenges in attracting bids, this year has seen an impressive surge in subscriptions, driven by robust institutional liquidity and a more discerning investor base. Notably, IPOs valued over Rs 5,000 crore have averaged a staggering 17.7 times subscription, marking the highest level since 2021.

Record Subscription Rates for Major IPOs

In 2025, the trend of large IPOs has been nothing short of extraordinary. According to recent reports, four out of six major issues launched this year have achieved blockbuster status, with LG Electronics India leading at 38.17 times subscription, followed by Lenskart Solutions at 28.35 times. HDB Financial Services and Groww both garnered 17.6 times subscription. In contrast, Hexaware Technologies and Tata Capital experienced more modest interest, with subscriptions of 2.27 times and 1.96 times, respectively. This remarkable performance reflects a significant shift in market dynamics, as institutional investors have become the primary drivers of demand.

Institutional Demand Fuels Market Growth

Market analysts attribute the current surge in IPO subscriptions to a broad-based institutional demand. Arun Kejriwal from Kejriwal Research noted that approximately 75-80% of subscriptions are coming from institutional investors. This includes corporate and bank treasuries, which have been actively participating in the bidding process. Many of these institutions have opted to exit their positions on the day of listing, further demonstrating their confidence in the market. A key factor contributing to this heightened interest is the price visibility of several large issuers, which had previously been active in the unlisted market. The disparity between grey-market pricing and IPO valuations has created attractive short-term arbitrage opportunities, prompting aggressive bidding.

Investor Mindset and Market Trends

The current IPO cycle reflects a maturing investor mindset, according to industry experts. Amit Ramchandani, MD & CEO of Motilal Oswal Investment Advisors, emphasized that investors are now rewarding scale, profitability, and brand-led growth rather than merely following narratives. This year has seen a decisive shift towards backing category leaders and innovative business models, with investors showing a preference for established companies over “me-too” ventures. While institutional investors continue to dominate allocations, retail participation has also become more consistent and discerning, indicating a broader engagement with the market.

Comparison with Previous Years

The contrast between the current market and previous years is stark. In 2021, many significant IPOs, excluding Nykaa’s exceptional 81-times subscription, struggled to gain traction, with companies like Paytm and Sona BLW failing to surpass the 2-times mark. The situation was similarly bleak for LIC in 2022, which attracted only 2.65 times interest. The absence of mega issues in 2023 further highlighted the challenges faced by the market. However, the resurgence in 2024, driven by the bull market, saw companies like Bajaj Housing Finance and Vishal Mega Mart achieve impressive subscription rates. Analysts suggest that the current IPO market is a reflection of the overall equity market sentiment, with increased liquidity leading to higher subscription numbers as more participants seek allocation.
