Supreme Court Intervenes in Federal Board Dispute: Blocks Donald Trump from Dismissing Lisa Cook; Hearing Set for January 2026

The U.S. Supreme Court has intervened in a significant legal battle involving President Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. On Wednesday, the court ruled that Cook will remain in her position until it hears arguments regarding her potential dismissal in January 2026. This decision upholds lower court rulings that blocked Trump’s attempt to remove Cook, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2022 and is the first Black woman to serve on the Fed’s board.

Legal Proceedings and Administration’s Response

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the Trump administration expressed its intention to continue pursuing Cook’s removal. White House spokesman Kush Desai stated that Trump had “lawfully removed Lisa Cook for cause” and expressed confidence in the administration’s chances of success in the upcoming Supreme Court hearing. Cook has contested her dismissal in court, and under the current order, she will continue to serve as a member of the Federal Reserve’s governing board until the case is resolved. The administration’s legal team is preparing to present oral arguments in January, aiming for a favorable outcome.

Background of the Dispute

The conflict began in August when Trump announced Cook’s firing via a letter on his Truth Social account, alleging mortgage fraud. He accused her of misrepresenting two homes as her primary residence in 2021 to obtain better loan terms. Trump’s Solicitor General, D. John Sauer, argued that the President has the authority to determine that interest rates should not be set by someone who appears to have lied. However, Cook has denied these allegations, and court documents suggest that the claims may lack substantial evidence. A U.S. district judge previously ruled that Trump’s action violated the legal standard requiring Fed governors to be dismissed only “for cause,” a decision that was upheld by a federal appeals court.

Impact on the Federal Reserve

This case poses a rare challenge to the independence of the Federal Reserve, an institution that has never seen a sitting governor dismissed by a president in its 112-year history. Trump’s criticism of the Fed’s interest rate policies has been a recurring theme during his presidency. With Cook’s contested removal and a vacancy created by the resignation of Governor Adriana Kugler, Trump has the opportunity to appoint two new members to the board. Additionally, the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in December regarding presidential authority over officials in independent federal agencies, which could have direct implications for Cook’s situation. Cook’s next chance to influence monetary policy will come during the Fed’s meeting scheduled for October 28–29.
