Supreme Court Embraces AI to Transform Indian Judiciary
The Supreme Court of India is harnessing cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to enhance its judicial processes, according to the eCommittee. These advancements aim to improve efficiency in case management, translation, and user communication through innovations such as chatbots.
A standout initiative is the Legal Research Analysis Assistant (LegRAA), developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the Centre of Excellence for eCourts. This AI tool is designed to assist judges with legal research and judicial decision-making support. Another significant advancement is Digital Courts 2.1, which provides judicial officers with access to comprehensive judgment databases and document management features, including automated drafting templates and voice-to-text functionalities.
Innovations in Electronic Filing and Case Management
The Supreme Court has partnered with IIT Madras to develop AI tools for the electronic filing system, specifically targeting defect identification. A prototype of this technology has been shared with 200 Advocates-on-Record for testing. Additionally, prototypes are being evaluated for metadata extraction and integration with the new Integrated Case Management & Information System (ICMIS).
Future Developments in AI Tools
One of the promising projects in the works is the Supreme Court Portal Assistance in Court Efficiency (SUPACE), an AI tool currently in the experimental phase. Its purpose is to intelligently analyze case facts and aid in the legal search of precedents.
As the eCommittee continues to explore the potential of AI, all current tools are in controlled pilot deployments to ensure responsible use while adhering to the regulatory frameworks established by the High Courts. Evaluations of these pilot initiatives will be critical in shaping the responsible adoption of AI within the judiciary.
Financial Investment in Technological Advancements
To further push the boundaries of AI in this domain, the Supreme Court has established an AI Committee tasked with overseeing the conceptualization and implementation of AI initiatives in the legal system. Under the newly approved Phase-III of the eCourts Project, which extends over four years, a budget of Rs 53.57 crore has been allocated for future technological advancements, including AI and blockchain. This investment aims to streamline court operations and enhance administrative efficiencies in the judicial system across the nation.
