Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘King’ Stays on Schedule, Ready to Face Off Against ‘Avengers: Doomsday

After a three-year hiatus from the silver screen, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is set to make a grand return with the much-anticipated action entertainer, King. A special announcement promo released in January confirmed that the film will hit theaters on December 24, 2026. Despite recent speculation suggesting a potential delay to 2027, sources have clarified that King remains firmly on schedule for its Christmas release.

Competition from Major Hollywood Releases

King will debut alongside three significant Hollywood films, creating a competitive landscape for box office supremacy. On December 18, audiences will witness the epic clash between Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. The Avengers franchise is expected to draw massive crowds, especially following the impressive box office performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has highlighted the strong demand for Marvel films among Indian audiences.

In contrast, Dune: Part Three is anticipated to attract a more niche audience. However, the previous installment, Dune: Part Two, which grossed Rs. 27.86 crore in India, indicates that the franchise has a dedicated fan base. The film’s release in IMAX is also expected to enhance its box office potential. Additionally, Jumanji: Open World, featuring stars like Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, is part of a franchise that has consistently performed well in India, with previous films each earning over Rs. 50 crores.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Star Power

A trade source commented on King‘s competitive edge, stating, “In India, King will have an edge as it is a Hindi film starring Shah Rukh Khan and several other prominent actors.” The source noted that while Avengers: Doomsday will pose the strongest competition among the Hollywood releases, all three films are significant international releases with blockbuster potential. This could present challenges for King in securing an adequate number of screens.

The source further elaborated, “However, only a film of King’s calibre can take on such Hollywood giants. Shah Rukh Khan is the biggest Indian star overseas. Moreover, Yash Raj Films is distributing King in international markets. They will surely leverage their years of experience and goodwill to secure the best possible screens and show timings.”

Concerns from the Exhibition Sector

Despite the excitement surrounding King, some concerns linger within the exhibition sector, particularly among single-screen theater owners. One anonymous theater owner expressed apprehension, saying, “It will undoubtedly be a beneficial period for the box office. We only hope that distributors and studios do not arm-twist us or force us to screen just one film.”

An industry insider also weighed in on the film’s release timing. “Many were hoping that King would release in 2027. However, that would probably have meant waiting until after April or May. Love & War is scheduled to release on January 21, while the holy month of Ramzan begins in the first week of February. This will be followed by major releases such as Spirit on March 5 and Varanasi on April 7. By arriving during Christmas, King may initially face some screen-sharing issues. On the positive side, however, it won’t face any fresh competition until Republic Day. If the word of mouth is as strong as expected, the sky is the limit for the film.”
