Secretary-General Emphasizes Importance of Dialogue and Diplomacy at Alliance of Civilizations Global Forum
UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened the eleventh Alliance of Civilizations Global Forum in Riyadh, emphasizing the urgent need for global interfaith dialogue. He acknowledged the forum’s significance, marking the 20th anniversary of the Alliance of Civilizations, which was initiated by the late Kofi Annan. Guterres highlighted the critical role of young people in driving positive change. With 40% of the global population aged between 10 and 24, this generation is the most connected in history. However, Guterres noted that young voices are often marginalized in decision-making processes that affect their lives. He commended the Alliance for its efforts to include youth perspectives and called on member states to invest in their future. By empowering young people, the world can harness their potential to address shared challenges and build a more inclusive society.
Empowering Women for Lasting Peace
The Secretary-General also addressed the significant impact of conflict on women and girls, noting that millions are affected by violence and displacement. He pointed out that despite their crucial role in peacebuilding, women are frequently excluded from peace negotiations. Guterres reaffirmed the importance of women’s leadership in achieving sustainable peace, referencing Security Council resolution 1325. He introduced the Common Pledge for Women’s Full, Equal, and Meaningful Participation in Peace Processes, which has been adopted by 42 entities, including Saudi Arabia. Guterres urged for greater inclusion of women in all aspects of public life, emphasizing that they should not be mere bystanders but active architects of a better future.

In his closing remarks, Guterres called for the reclamation of religion as a source of compassion and reconciliation rather than division. He acknowledged the potential of faith to foster harmony and understanding among diverse communities. Guterres urged participants to reaffirm their commitment to mutual respect and understanding, highlighting that the vision of the Alliance of Civilizations is more relevant than ever.
