Secretary-General Calls for Justice, Aid, and End to Occupation on International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People

UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a poignant message on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, observed on November 29. This year’s observance comes in the wake of two years marked by immense suffering in Gaza, recently punctuated by the initiation of a much-needed ceasefire. Guterres highlighted the profound loss experienced by survivors, the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and the urgent need for international support and adherence to humanitarian principles.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with survivors grappling with the aftermath of extensive loss. Guterres noted that tens of thousands have died, including a heartbreaking number of children, while countless others have sustained injuries. The region is plagued by hunger, disease, and psychological trauma, exacerbated by the destruction of essential infrastructure such as schools, homes, and hospitals. The recent ceasefire provides a flicker of hope, but the UN Secretary-General emphasized the necessity for all parties to respect this truce and work collaboratively towards sustainable solutions that align with international law.

Ongoing Injustice in the West Bank

In addition to the crisis in Gaza, Guterres pointed out the persistent injustices faced in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. He condemned Israeli military operations, settler violence, and the ongoing expansion of settlements, which contribute to the displacement and suffering of the Palestinian population. The Secretary-General also highlighted the alarming number of humanitarian workers killed, particularly Palestinian UN staff, marking a tragic milestone in the organization’s history. The loss of journalists in the region has also reached unprecedented levels, making this conflict one of the deadliest for media professionals since World War II.

Call for International Support

Guterres reiterated the importance of allowing life-saving humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza on a large scale. He called on the international community to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which serves as a critical lifeline for millions of Palestinians, including refugees. The Secretary-General urged for an end to the unlawful occupation of Palestinian territories, as affirmed by the International Court of Justice and the UN General Assembly. He advocated for meaningful progress towards a two-state solution, envisioning a future where Israel and Palestine coexist peacefully within recognized borders, with Jerusalem serving as the capital for both states.

Solidarity and Hope

On this International Day of Solidarity, Guterres encouraged the global community to draw inspiration from the resilience and hope of the Palestinian people. He emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity with their rights to dignity, justice, and self-determination. The Secretary-General called for collective efforts to build a peaceful future for all, underscoring the need for unity in addressing the ongoing challenges faced by the Palestinian population. The message serves as a reminder of the enduring human spirit and the necessity for continued advocacy for peace and justice in the region.
