IIT Indore Workshop Focuses on Student Wellbeing and Resilience
In a call to action for educational institutions, Dr. Suhas S. Joshi, Director of IIT Indore, emphasized the importance of building resilient minds and advancing student wellbeing during a recent workshop. This event marked the conclusion of a two-day workshop focused on positive mental health and resilience, held at the Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. Dr. Joshi urged participants to convert the workshop’s insights into lasting practices that foster holistic student wellbeing across campuses.
Workshop Highlights and Objectives
The workshop, titled “Samvardhan: From Academic Excellence to Sustainable Wellness,” was organised in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education under the Union Ministry of Education. Its primary goal was to empower higher education institutions in creating healthier and more supportive environments for students. The event brought together leaders, faculty, mental health professionals, and students from various educational institutions to share experiences and craft actionable strategies for enhancing student wellbeing.
Collaborative Learning Experience
Designed to facilitate teamwork and experiential learning, the workshop featured expert discussions, hands-on activities, and brainstorming sessions. Esteemed panelists included specialists in psychiatry, nutrition, Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), and learning disabilities, who provided diverse perspectives on student mental health. Participants engaged in sessions covering topics like social belonging, early intervention tactics, and life skills mentoring to nurture a more robust educational atmosphere.
Practical Approaches on Day One
The first day included a variety of sessions discussing the psychosocial framework necessary for thriving educational settings. Topics ranged from institutional policies to initiatives that foster social connection among students. These discussions highlighted the significance of well-being strategies in curriculum and campus policies, providing a solid foundation for future actions.
Hands-On Learning on Day Two
The second day shifted towards practical applications, focusing on identifying early warning signs related to mental health and specific learning disabilities. It also addressed the prevention of substance abuse and the importance of creating collaborative living environments through mentoring networks. Participants were invited to develop indicators of institutional wellbeing and formulate action plans to implement in their respective institutions.
Broad Participation and Future Implications
The workshop was a part of the Teacher Connect Programme linked to the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP), and had representation from 94 participants across 21 educational institutions spanning Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh. This diverse gathering underlined the collective commitment needed to promote student mental health and resilience in higher education.
