Secretary-General Appoints Vladanka Andreeva as United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cambodia

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Vladanka Andreeva from North Macedonia as the new United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cambodia, following the approval of the host government. Ms. Andreeva officially began her role on January 10. With over 25 years of extensive experience in international development and humanitarian coordination, she is set to lead the UN’s efforts in Cambodia.

Extensive Experience in International Development

Vladanka Andreeva brings a wealth of experience to her new position, having worked in various capacities within the United Nations for over two decades. Her most recent role was as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, where she successfully guided the UN country team in promoting national sustainable development priorities. This included efforts in post-conflict recovery, where she played a crucial role in fostering strategic leadership and collaboration among UN agencies. During her tenure, she was instrumental in preparing for the upcoming twenty-ninth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), advocating for a climate agenda that is both inclusive and development-focused.

Leadership in Health and Humanitarian Efforts

Before her appointment in Azerbaijan, Ms. Andreeva held several senior positions with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Notably, she served as the Country Director in Cambodia, where she led the UN’s COVID-19 response and coordination initiatives. Her expertise also extends to her roles as Strategic Intervention Adviser at the UNAIDS Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and Monitoring and Evaluation Team Lead for UNAIDS in Vietnam. Additionally, she has experience with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a Policy Adviser for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, as well as providing advisory support to the UN Resident Coordinator in North Macedonia.

Humanitarian Background and Educational Qualifications

Ms. Andreeva’s career began with humanitarian operations, where she coordinated relief efforts for refugee communities with the non-profit organization Pharmaciens Sans Frontières. This early experience laid the foundation for her commitment to humanitarian work and international development. She holds a bachelor’s degree in dental medicine and a master’s degree in public health, equipping her with a strong academic background to address health-related challenges in her new role.
