Revolutionizing Rural Water Management: Sujalam Bharat App Launched

The Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri C.R. Patil, has unveiled the **Sujalam Bharat App**, a pivotal digital initiative aimed at revolutionizing rural drinking water governance. This innovative app provides comprehensive, real-time information not only to citizens but also to institutions, fostering transparency and empowering local communities. Developed with support from the **Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics** (**BISAG-N**), the app leverages advanced geo-referencing to monitor and manage rural water supply infrastructure as part of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Enhancing Transparency and Community Engagement
During the launch event, Minister Patil emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it represents a significant advancement for the Jal Jeevan Mission, enhancing transparency and promoting community ownership of rural water supply systems. **Shri Ashok K.K. Meena, Secretary of DDWS**, addressed representatives from various States and Union Territories (UTs), highlighting the necessity of timely data integration and structured implementation of the Sujalam Bharat platform.
Technological Insights on the Sujalam Bharat App
**Shri T.P. Singh, Director General of BISAG-N**, shared insights into the app’s technological framework and the Sujalam Bharat Database. He discussed how this unified system aims to assist States and districts in adopting a well-organized digital approach to operate and maintain rural water supply schemes. The event garnered online participation from representatives across all States and UTs, reflecting a collective commitment to enhanced water governance.
A Unique Identity for Every Water Scheme
The Sujalam Bharat Database will assign a unique Sujalam Bharat – Sujal Gaon ID to each water scheme and its corresponding service area. This distinctive identifier will ensure clear tracking of which households are being served by which water supply schemes, thereby improving accountability.
Training for Effective Implementation
Following the app launch, a detailed training and orientation session was conducted by the **BISAG-N technical team** for officials from all States and UTs. This session focused on the operational use of the Sujalam Bharat App, geo-referencing techniques, and the integration of rural water supply assets onto the platform, providing state officials with hands-on guidance for effective implementation.
Building a Digital Framework for Water Governance
The Sujalam Bharat Database will securely compile vital data such as water sources, asset inventories, operational records, water quality metrics, and community feedback. With every habitation having a distinct profile, critical information including the source of drinking water, infrastructure condition, supply reliability, and maintenance arrangements will be easily accessible.
Promoting Sustainability and Efficiency
**Shri Kamal Kishore Soan, AS&MD-NJJM**, underlined the initiative’s role in strengthening the digital backbone of the Jal Jeevan Mission. He thanked the participating States and UTs for their commitment and encouraged them to create clear action plans for timely data submission, ensuring smooth implementation without bottlenecks.
A Step Towards a Smart Water Management Future
The Sujalam Bharat App, equipped with a comprehensive digital registry, will record the history of infrastructure conditions and maintenance activities, laying the groundwork for more reliable operations and long-term sustainability. Its integration with **PM Gati Shakti GIS** ensures accurate geospatial mapping of rural water networks, paving the way for future enhancements and expansions.
This launch signifies a milestone in establishing a secure, efficient, and technologically advanced drinking water ecosystem in rural India. Just as Aadhaar became the backbone of India’s identity system, the Sujalam Bharat – Sujal Gaon ID aims to form a foundational framework for transparent, accountable, and citizen-centric rural water management. The Sujalam Bharat App will be available for download on the Google Play Store soon.
