Realme Unveils Revolutionary Interchangeable-Lens Smartphone Concept

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, Realme introduced an innovative interchangeable-lens concept that promises to transform smartphone photography. This prototype technology allows users to attach DSLR lenses directly to their smartphones, significantly enhancing image quality. Additionally, Realme previewed two cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) imaging features designed to streamline photo and video editing.

Realme Demonstrates Interchangeable-Lens Concept

Realme’s new interchangeable-lens concept was unveiled in a press release, highlighting its potential to elevate smartphone photography. Unlike traditional smartphone cameras, this system enables users to mount DSLR lenses onto their devices, allowing for professional-grade image capture. The prototype features a 1-inch customized Sony sensor and a proprietary lens mount system, which connects to compatible smartphones. This innovative setup allows the smartphone’s software to utilize the attached lens as the primary camera.

During the MWC 2025 event, Realme showcased two specific lenses: a 73mm portrait lens and a 234mm telephoto lens. These mounts are designed to facilitate a variety of photography styles, including stunning bokeh effects and lossless 10x zoom capabilities. Although the technology is still in the prototype stage and not yet available for mass production, Realme emphasizes its commitment to addressing industry challenges, such as sensor size limitations and the drawbacks of digital zoom.

AI Imaging Features Enhance User Experience

In addition to the groundbreaking lens technology, Realme previewed two new AI imaging features aimed at simplifying the editing process for users. The first feature, known as AI Voice-based Retoucher, allows users to edit their photos using voice commands. For instance, users can instruct the AI to “remove the background” or “change the color of the sky,” and the system will execute these commands without requiring any touch input.

The second feature, AI Video Eraser, offers a similar level of convenience for video editing. This tool enables users to eliminate unwanted objects or people from their videos with just a single tap, streamlining what would typically be a labor-intensive frame-by-frame editing process. While these features promise to enhance the user experience, Realme has not yet disclosed a timeline for their rollout to consumers.

Looking Ahead: Realme’s Vision for Mobile Photography

Realme’s introduction of the interchangeable-lens concept and AI imaging features marks a significant step forward in mobile photography. By combining advanced lens technology with intuitive AI tools, the company aims to empower users to capture and edit high-quality images and videos effortlessly. As the prototype progresses, Realme is focused on overcoming existing limitations in smartphone camera technology, paving the way for a new era of mobile photography.
