Ranveer Singh to Revise Apology for Kantara Comments as Case Postponed to April 23
Ranveer Singh has expressed his willingness to submit a revised affidavit of apology regarding his controversial remarks about the depiction of Chamundi Devi in the film Kantara. During a hearing at the Karnataka High Court, Singh’s legal representative stated that the actor had already filed an affidavit expressing regret but is prepared to amend it if necessary. The case, which has drawn significant attention, is set to continue with the next hearing scheduled for April 23.
Actor’s Apology and Commitment
In a recent court session, Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya, representing Ranveer Singh, informed Justice M. Nagaprasanna that the actor had previously submitted an affidavit conveying his regret over the remarks made during the International Film Festival of India in Goa. Singh acknowledged that he did not intend to offend the sentiments of devotees and emphasized his respect for all faiths and traditions. Poovayya highlighted that Singh expressed “deepest regret and unconditional apology” in the affidavit and committed to visiting the temple of Chamundi Devi to offer prayers. The actor, who grew up in a Sindhi household in Mumbai, noted that he was unaware of the sensitivities surrounding the issue at the time of his comments.
Concerns Over the Sincerity of the Apology
The complainant in the case, Prashanth Methal, raised doubts about the authenticity of Singh’s apology. Methal pointed out that actor and filmmaker Rishab Shetty had previously advised Singh against making such remarks. He urged the court to require a more substantial affidavit that accurately reflects Singh’s remorse. In response, Poovayya indicated a willingness to collaborate with the complainant to refine the wording of the apology and submit a revised affidavit to the court. Justice Nagaprasanna acknowledged this submission and scheduled the next hearing for April 23.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy stems from remarks made by Singh during a speech at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, where he praised Rishab Shetty’s performance in *Kantara*. In his comments, Singh referred to Chamundi Devi as a “female ghost” and mimicked a scene from the film, which sparked backlash on social media. Following a formal complaint, a Bengaluru magistrate ordered an investigation under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. Consequently, the High Grounds Police Station registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Singh, citing provisions related to religious enmity, religious insult, and public mischief. Singh later approached the High Court, asserting that his remarks were taken out of context and were intended solely to appreciate Shetty’s performance, with no intention to offend religious sentiments or incite discord among communities.
