Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 Chipset
Qualcomm has officially launched its latest mobile processor, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset. Announced on Wednesday, this new chipset promises significant upgrades over its predecessor. It is designed to enhance the performance and capabilities of affordable smartphones. Notably, it is the first in its series to support generative artificial intelligence (AI) and Snapdragon Game Super Resolution for improved gaming experiences. Additionally, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 brings enhancements in low-light photography, wireless audio sharing via Bluetooth, and faster 5G connectivity across various networks.
Major Features of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset is a significant advancement in mobile technology. It is the first in the series to be built using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) 4nm process technology. Previously, Qualcomm utilized a 4nm node from Samsung. This new fabrication process allows for better performance and energy efficiency.
The chipset features ARMv9-based CPU cores, including the Cortex-A720 as the primary core, which operates at 2.3GHz. In addition to this, there are three performance cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four efficiency cores running at 2.3GHz. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 also includes a Kyro series CPU, an Adreno GPU, and a Qualcomm Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) for AI tasks. Qualcomm claims that this new SoC offers an 11% increase in CPU performance, a 29% boost in graphics rendering, and a 12% improvement in power optimization. However, details regarding the Adreno GPU have not yet been disclosed.
Enhanced AI and Camera Capabilities
One of the standout features of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 is its Qualcomm AI Engine, which introduces INT4 support for the first time in this series. This enhancement allows for faster AI processing, optimizing models to fit within the limited RAM of affordable devices. This capability is crucial as AI becomes increasingly integrated into mobile applications.
In terms of photography, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 supports triple 12-bit image signal processors (ISPs), enabling compatibility with sensors up to 200 megapixels. It also supports 4K HDR video recording at 30 frames per second. Other supported formats include HDR10, HLG, and 10-bit HEIF. These features will significantly enhance the photography and videography experience for users, particularly in low-light conditions.
Connectivity and Future Smartphone Releases
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset supports a wide range of connectivity options. It can handle full-HD+ (1080+) resolution displays with refresh rates up to 144Hz. Qualcomm has highlighted that the new chipset can support up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, operating at 3,200MHz. It also offers UFS 3.1 support for storage, ensuring faster data access.
The integrated 5G modem supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave frequencies, with downlink speeds reaching up to 2.9Gbps. Additionally, the chipset supports Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.4 with aptX Adaptive, and triple-frequency positioning for GPS. USB Type-C 3.1 connectivity is also included, making it a versatile choice for modern smartphones.
Several smartphone manufacturers, including Realme, Oppo, and Honor, are expected to launch devices featuring the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset in the coming months. This new technology is set to redefine the capabilities of affordable smartphones, making advanced features more accessible to a broader audience.
