Prime Minister Modi and King Abdullah II Strengthen India-Jordan Ties
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan met today at the Al Husseiniya Palace, marking a significant moment in bilateral relations as both nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties. Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi received a warm ceremonial welcome, setting a positive tone for the discussions ahead.
The two leaders engaged in meetings at both restricted and delegation levels, where they reflected on their past interactions and the deep-rooted historical friendship between their countries. Prime Minister Modi praised King Abdullah II for his dedication to enhancing the partnership between India and Jordan. In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, King Abdullah II expressed strong support for India’s efforts to combat terrorism, unequivocally condemning it in all its forms.
During their discussions, the leaders explored avenues to further solidify cooperation across various sectors, including trade, defense, renewable energy, agriculture, technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and cultural exchange. Recognizing India as Jordan’s third-largest trading partner, Prime Minister Modi proposed an ambitious goal to elevate bilateral trade to $5 billion over the next five years. He also suggested the integration of Jordan’s digital payment systems with India’s United Payments Interface (UPI), potentially enhancing financial transactions between the two nations.
Fertilizer supply was another crucial topic, with King Abdullah II confirming Jordan’s status as a key fertilizer supplier to India. Discussions are ongoing regarding substantial investments in Jordan that aim to meet the growing demand for phosphatic fertilizer in India.
Both leaders exchanged views on regional developments and global issues, emphasizing the need for restoring peace and stability. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote lasting peace in the region.
In a significant move, the two sides finalized several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in key areas such as culture, renewable energy, water management, and digital public infrastructure, along with a twinning arrangement between Petra and Ellora. These agreements are expected to provide a substantial boost to India-Jordan relations.
