PM Modi Launches Major Infrastructure Initiatives in Sikkim, Focusing on Healthcare, Housing, Education, and More
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a two-day visit to Sikkim, celebrating the state’s Golden Jubilee of statehood. During his visit, he emphasized the importance of the Northeast region, referring to it as India’s “Ashtalakshmi.” Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for numerous development projects, totaling over Rs 4,000 crore, aimed at enhancing infrastructure, healthcare, education, and more, to foster inclusive growth in the region.
Inauguration of Key Healthcare Projects
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for a 100-bedded Ayurveda Hospital in Yangang, located in the Namchi district. This facility aims to enhance healthcare access through traditional medical practices. Additionally, he inaugurated a 30-bedded Integrated Sowa Rigpa Hospital at NIT Deorali, which will further improve the availability of traditional medicine in Sikkim. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in the state, ensuring that residents have access to diverse medical options.
In the education sector, several institutions were inaugurated, including the permanent campus of Sikkim University in Yangang and the administrative block of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University of Excellence in Chakung. Other notable openings included Helen Lepcha Medical College in Gangtok and Dentam Professional College in Gyalshing district. The Prime Minister also inaugurated model residential schools and a monastic hostel-cum-classroom, reflecting a commitment to enhancing educational facilities across Sikkim.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Enhancements
To improve connectivity within Sikkim, PM Modi laid the foundation for two double-lane steel arch bridges over the River Teesta, linking Namchi and Gangtok districts. He also inaugurated the widening and strengthening of the road from Birdhang to Namchi via Kitchudumra, which is expected to facilitate smoother travel between these districts. In the power sector, an upgraded Transmission and Distribution network in Gangtok was inaugurated, aimed at enhancing electricity supply reliability.
Moreover, the Prime Minister launched the Jan Seva Sachivalaya (Mini Secretariat) at Lumsey and the Civil Service Officers Institute in Gangtok, which are expected to bolster urban development. Housing projects, including homes under the Sikkim Urban Garib Awas Yojana and accommodations for police personnel, were also inaugurated, demonstrating a commitment to improving living conditions for residents.
Environmental and Agricultural Initiatives
In a bid to address environmental concerns, PM Modi launched a sewerage system rehabilitation project in Singtam and a pollution control initiative for the River Rani Chu in Gangtok. These projects aim to enhance the ecological health of the region and ensure sustainable development practices are in place.
In agriculture, the inauguration of the Sikkim IFFCO Processing Plant marks a significant step towards supporting local farmers and improving agro-processing capabilities. This facility is expected to provide farmers with better resources and infrastructure, ultimately contributing to the agricultural economy of the state.
Tourism Development Projects
Tourism also received a boost during the Prime Minister’s visit, with several projects inaugurated to enhance the state’s appeal as a travel destination. The redevelopment of the Ridge area in Gangtok and the establishment of eco-tourism and pilgrimage facilities at Dodak in Soreng are among the highlights. Additionally, facilities linked to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and an Eco-Pilgrimage Complex in Gyalshing district were announced, aimed at attracting more visitors and promoting Sikkim’s rich cultural heritage.
These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to fostering comprehensive development in Sikkim, ensuring that the state continues to thrive economically and socially.
