Oil Prices Decline Amid Easing Supply Concerns and Ongoing Middle East Tensions

Oil prices fell on Thursday as traders reacted to potential diplomatic developments between the US and Iran while remaining cautious about escalating supply disruptions in the Middle East. Brent crude dropped by $0.85, or 0.74%, settling at $114.50 a barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) decreased by $0.91, or 0.89%, to $101.90. This decline reversed some of the gains from the previous session, where Brent had risen by 1.3% and WTI by 3%.

The possibility of renewed diplomatic talks emerged after US Vice President JD Vance reached out to Iranian security council chief Mohsen Rezaei in an effort to restart peace negotiations, according to the Wall Street Journal. While this development provided some relief to oil markets, concerns about increased regional hostilities continue to loom. Traders are particularly wary of renewed attacks from Yemen’s Houthis and the potential for US military action against Iran following the mid-term elections on November 3.

Houthi Attacks Keep Supply Concerns Alive

Tensions in the conflict involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia intensified on Thursday. The Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting and destroying a ballistic missile aimed at the kingdom’s eastern region. This incident follows a recent attack on Aden airport and a claim by the Houthis that they targeted Saudi Arabia’s largest oil refinery with a missile. The refinery, which has a capacity of 550,000 barrels per day, has not been confirmed as struck by Saudi authorities.

These ongoing attacks have heightened concerns about potential supply disruptions, even as diplomatic efforts suggest a possibility of easing tensions. The situation remains fluid, with both sides showing no signs of de-escalation.

Conflicting Signals from US-Iran Peace Efforts

Negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran have produced mixed signals. Qatari mediators reportedly presented Iran with a new draft agreement, but a senior Iranian official dismissed the proposals as unacceptable. Iran’s foreign minister indicated that Tehran is still open to diplomacy, suggesting that a resolution could be reached sooner than expected if the right conditions are met.

The contrasting positions from both sides leave the prospects for a diplomatic resolution uncertain. However, the potential for renewed negotiations has contributed to the recent decline in crude prices. Additionally, US inventory data revealed that energy companies withdrew 1.9 million barrels of crude oil from storage during the week ending October 23. In contrast, gasoline inventories rose by 3.9 million barrels, defying analysts’ expectations of a decrease. This mixed data further complicates the outlook for oil markets.
