Northeastern Fisheries Meet: A Step Towards Sustainability
The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, is set to host a significant event titled “Northeastern Region States Meet” on January 6, 2024. This meeting will take place at the Radisson Hotel in Guwahati, Assam. The Union Minister, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, will chair the event, which aims to review the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The meeting will also feature several prominent dignitaries, including state ministers from various Northeastern states. This gathering is crucial for discussing the future of fisheries in the region and addressing the challenges faced by the sector.
Key Projects and Initiatives
During the meet, the Union Minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation for key projects worth approximately ₹50 crore under the PMMSY. This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing the fisheries sector in the Northeastern Region. The projects aim to promote self-sustained fisheries, which are vital for the local economy.
Additionally, certificates will be distributed to beneficiaries in the fisheries sector. These include National Fisheries Development Program (NFDP) registration certificates, Kisan Credit Cards (KCC), and awards for the best Fish Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs) and fisheries start-ups. This recognition is essential for encouraging growth and innovation within the sector.
The government’s focus on sustainable practices is evident in its plans to develop an Organic Fisheries Cluster in Soreng District, Sikkim. This initiative aims to promote organic fisheries and aquaculture, providing economic, environmental, and social benefits. By positioning Sikkim as a leader in sustainable aquaculture, the government hopes to set a benchmark for other states in the region.
Addressing Challenges in Fisheries
A technical session titled “Issues and Challenges in Fisheries & Aquaculture in the Northeastern Region” will be a highlight of the meet. Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General of ICAR (Fisheries), will lead this session. He will discuss the specific challenges faced by the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the region.
Key issues include resource management, infrastructure limitations, market access, and the impact of climate change. Dr. Jena will also present potential solutions and innovative approaches tailored to the region’s unique ecological and socio-economic conditions. This session aims to provide practical strategies to support sustainable development and growth in these vital sectors.
By addressing these challenges, the meet aims to create a roadmap for the future of fisheries in the Northeastern Region. It will serve as a platform for stakeholders to share innovative solutions and promote sustainable practices that align with the region’s aquatic resources.
A Vision for Sustainable Growth
The Northeastern Region of India is known for its rich aquatic biodiversity and vast water resources. This region has immense potential to drive economic growth, ensure food security, and uplift livelihoods. The fisheries sector plays a vital role in this framework, with approximately 422 reported fish species contributing to its diversity.
Since the establishment of a dedicated Ministry and Department of Fisheries in 2019, the sector has seen significant growth. Government investments have increased, with ₹2,114.73 crore allocated under the Blue Revolution and PMMSY since 2014-15. Fish production has expanded from 3.78 lakh metric tons in 2013-14 to 6.41 lakh metric tons in 2023-24. This growth is accompanied by advancements in hatcheries, scientific fish farming techniques, and infrastructure development.
