NITI Aayog and TEXMiN Unite for Critical Mineral Innovations
NITI Aayog has partnered with TEXMiN, the Technology Translation Research Park initiative under the Department of Science and Technology, to enhance collaboration in the critical and strategic minerals sector. This significant collaboration aims to foster indigenous technological advancements, stimulate research and innovation, and support the establishment of resilient and sustainable mineral value chains within India. This effort aligns with the goals of the National Critical Mineral Mission and the broader vision of achieving an Aatmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat.
Joint Statement of Intent Signed
The Joint Statement of Intent was formalized during a visit by Prof. Gobardhan Das, a member of NITI Aayog, to the Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad. During this visit, he also inaugurated the National Symposium on Critical Minerals and Rare Earths, part of the 45th Annual National Conference organized by the Indian Council of Chemists. The event took place on October 31, 2026.
Strategic Importance of Critical Minerals
In his address at the symposium, Prof. Das underscored the vital role critical minerals play as strategic enablers of national security and technological self-reliance. He pointed out that aiming for a Viksit Bharat by 2047 requires building strong indigenous technological capabilities through robust research and industry partnerships. He advocated for a shift from a traditional mine-centric approach to a more integrated value chain that includes exploration, processing, refining, advanced materials development, and recycling.
Innovation in Resource Recovery
Furthermore, Prof. Das emphasized the opportunities available in recovering critical minerals from secondary resources, such as coal fly ash, red mud, mine tailings, and electronic waste. He highlighted the necessity of translating ongoing research into commercially viable technologies, which will aid in the sustainable utilization of resources.
Four Pillars of Collaboration
The collaboration between NITI Aayog and TEXMiN is structured around four key areas: collaborative research and technology development, technical and strategic studies, policy and institutional support, and capacity building alongside knowledge exchange. This model aims to strengthen local capabilities, facilitate effective technology translation, and improve connections among government bodies, academic institutions, research organizations, and industry stakeholders.
Engaging the Community
The symposium successfully gathered policymakers, researchers, technology developers, and representatives from the industry to discuss strategies for enhancing India’s ecosystem surrounding critical minerals and rare earths. This initiative is anticipated to significantly contribute to India’s ambition of establishing dependable critical mineral supply chains and fostering greater technological self-reliance.
