IndiGo CEO Willie Walsh Discusses A350 Aircraft Delivery Amid Challenges in the Airline Industry

IndiGo is navigating a challenging aviation landscape marked by rising fuel costs and operational pressures, according to CEO Willie Walsh. Despite these hurdles, Walsh expressed optimism about the airline’s growth potential and its focus on maintaining a competitive cost structure. He announced that IndiGo expects to receive its first wide-body Airbus A350 aircraft in the second quarter of 2028, positioning the airline for success in the long-haul market.

IndiGo focuses on costs amid elevated fuel expenses

In response to increased operational pressures, IndiGo has reduced its capacity. For the July-September quarter, the airline reported fuel expenses of Rs 9,966.8 crore, a significant rise of 67.2% from Rs 5,961.8 crore in the same period last year. Capacity, measured in available seat kilometres, decreased by 1% to 40.8 billion. Despite a 4.7% drop in passenger numbers to 2.7 crore, passenger ticket revenue rose by 29.3% to Rs 20,652.2 crore, although the load factor fell by 2.2 percentage points to 80.3%.

Walsh noted that elevated fuel costs are likely to persist, prompting IndiGo to explore internal measures to mitigate these increases. The airline’s net loss for the September quarter reached Rs 1,879.1 crore, marking its third consecutive quarterly loss. However, total income increased by 24% year-on-year to Rs 24,311.9 crore.

A350 deliveries and Navi Mumbai airport plans

Looking ahead, Walsh confirmed that IndiGo anticipates the delivery of its A350 aircraft starting in the second quarter of 2028, which will facilitate its entry into the long-haul market. He also highlighted the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport as a significant opportunity for the airline, noting that the decision to shift some international flights to the new airport was made in IndiGo’s best interest.

Currently, IndiGo operates over 2,100 flights daily with a fleet of more than 400 aircraft. As of September 30, the airline had a total of 442 aircraft and operated a peak of 2,020 daily flights during the July-September quarter. Its cash balance stood at Rs 52,685.4 crore, which includes Rs 39,929 crore in free cash and Rs 12,756.4 crore in restricted cash. Total debt, including capitalized operating lease liabilities, was reported at Rs 87,303.1 crore.
