Anthropic Reports Q3 Earnings: Revenue Surges to $17 Billion Amid $567 Million Operating Loss

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic reported a staggering 1,127% year-on-year revenue increase, reaching $17 billion for the September quarter. However, this rapid growth was accompanied by soaring computing costs, resulting in an operating loss of $567 million. This loss contrasts sharply with an operating income of $974 million recorded in the previous quarter.

Rising Costs and Demand Constraints

Anthropic’s updated registration statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed that computing and infrastructure expenses surged 382% year-on-year to $9.9 billion. The company attributed this increase partly to the high costs associated with securing computing capacity through short-term commitments, which are pricier than longer-term contracts. Anthropic noted ongoing challenges in meeting customer demand, stating, “We have consistently operated in a compute-constrained environment where customer demand exceeds available compute.”

The operating loss for the September quarter also included approximately $2 billion in non-cash expenses related to a donation-matching program. On an adjusted basis, operating income was reported at $2.5 billion, slightly up from $2.2 billion in the June quarter. However, the adjusted operating margin narrowed to 15% from 19%.

Financial Overview and Future Commitments

For the first nine months of 2026, Anthropic’s revenue reached $33.2 billion, a significant increase from $2.5 billion during the same period last year. The operating loss for this timeframe narrowed to $1.3 billion from $5.2 billion. The company reported a net loss of $23.3 billion for the September quarter and $104 billion for the first nine months of the year, largely due to a $94.3 billion non-cash charge linked to changes in the fair value of convertible notes and other financial instruments.

Anthropic’s total commitments to purchase and lease computing capacity amounted to $895.4 billion, with $447.5 billion expected to come due before December 2030. This substantial financial obligation highlights the capital-intensive nature of developing and operating advanced AI systems. Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic is preparing to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol ANT. The filing does not yet specify the number of shares to be offered or the price range.
