The new Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations, Umar Hadi, officially presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today. He was inaugurated as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary by President Prabowo Subianto on August 25, 2025, marking a new chapter in Indonesia’s representation at the UN in New York.

Ambassador Umar Hadi brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Before his appointment, he served as the Director General for American and European Affairs at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His previous positions include Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Korea from 2017 to 2021 and Consul General in Los Angeles from 2014 to 2017. Hadi has also held various roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since joining in 1992, including Director for European Affairs and Deputy Director at the Minister’s Office. His extensive background in diplomacy includes serving as Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the United Nations in Geneva, where he gained valuable insights into international relations.

Throughout his career, Ambassador Hadi has been actively involved in numerous international negotiations and conferences. Umar Hadi’s academic credentials include studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in the United States, the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Switzerland, and Padjadjaran University in Indonesia. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys reading about world history, cycling, and spending time with his family. Born on February 11, 1968, he is married to Siti Nila Purnama Hadi, and they have a daughter, Ratna Aini Hadi, who is pursuing doctoral research in Finland.
