New Memorial Honors Assam Movement Martyrs in Guwahati

In a heartfelt tribute to the heroes of the Assam Movement, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated the ‘Shaheed Smarak Kshetra and Park’ in West Boragaon, Guwahati. This significant memorial, which pays homage to the martyrs who gave their lives for the preservation of Assam’s identity and culture, was unveiled on the occasion of Shaheed Divas. The foundation stone was originally laid in December 2019, with the consecration ceremony following a year later.
During the inauguration ceremony, Minister Sonowal, alongside Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, dedicated the memorial to the public and honored the martyrs with floral tributes. Addressing a gathering that included state ministers, members of Parliament, and the families of martyrs, Sonowal underscored the lasting impact of their sacrifices on future generations. He emphasized that the courage of these individuals continues to inspire the ongoing efforts to protect Assam’s unique culture, language, and identity.
Saluting Unsung Heroes
Sonowal articulated the profound significance of the Assam Movement, describing it as a pivotal mass struggle aimed at safeguarding the rights and identity of the Assamese people. He reflected on the unity that this movement fostered among the Assamese community, asserting that its spirit endures as an enduring promise to uphold these values. He recognized the sacrifice of the 860 martyrs who fell during the struggle and paid tribute to those who faced hardship and persecution.
A Government Commitment
The Union Minister highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken significant action to address illegal infiltration, a key issue that has long threatened Assam’s demographic integrity. Sonowal reminisced about his visit to the India-Bangladesh border in 2016 with leaders from the All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) to evaluate the region’s security conditions, a visit sanctioned by the Prime Minister. He mentioned various government initiatives, including financial support provided to the families of martyrs and those affected by the conflict.
Moreover, Sonowal pointed out the completion of border security measures, such as the introduction of smart fencing technology and efforts to fortify 272 kilometers of the unfenced border. He also referenced the formation of a High-Level Committee aimed at implementing measures outlined in Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which submitted its report in February 2020.
Building a New Assam
In closing, Sonowal reiterated the sentiment that the Assam Movement represents more than a historical event; it embodies the consciousness of identity and rights. He expressed a steadfast commitment to fostering a secure and developed Assam, emphasizing that the legacy of the movement will play a vital role in protecting national unity and integrity, while shaping a promising future for the state.
