National Handicrafts Week: Celebrating Women Artisans and Craft Heritage

In a vibrant celebration of India’s rich craft traditions, Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, visited The Kunj during the National Handicrafts & Heritage Week 2025. Accompanied by Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) Smt. Amrit Raj and other senior officials, she engaged with women-led craft retailers, known as Shilp Didis, and artisans, exploring their crafts through live demonstrations and masterclasses.

Empowering Artisans through Craft

During her visit, the Secretary facilitated an interactive session where artisans from various regions shared their inspiring journeys and the challenges they face in creating sustainable livelihoods through craft-based entrepreneurship. Smt. Rao underscored the importance of the Shilp Didi initiative, describing it as a transformative movement that empowers women artisans, strengthens rural economies, and elevates India’s handmade traditions from local markets to global platforms.

Engaging Events at The Kunj

The Kunj is hosting a series of workshops, discussions, and hands-on activities from December 8 to December 14, 2025, aimed at celebrating India’s diverse craft heritage. These events are designed to immerse participants in the rich tapestry of Indian craftsmanship, offering opportunities to learn directly from artisans. Attendees can engage with traditional techniques and hear stories that highlight the cultural significance of these practices.

Highlighting Craft Traditions

Each participating brand at The Kunj will host carefully curated sessions that spotlight regional craftsmanship. These workshops will feature both traditional art forms and contemporary interpretations, enabling a comprehensive exploration of heritage practices. This initiative not only promotes the craftsmanship but also aims to inspire visitors about the importance of sustaining and valuing India’s craft heritage.

Through such proactive measures, the government aims to align the empowerment of artisans with India’s broader vision of self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, positioning it as a vital step towards achieving a developed nation.
