Michelangelo: Renaissance Master of Sculpture and Paint

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564) was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance. He created two of the most influential frescoes in Western art—the Genesis scenes on the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment on its altar wall—and achieved fame early with masterworks including the Pietà and David, both completed before age 30.

Early Life and Education

Michelangelo was born on 6 March 1475 in Caprese, a small town in Valtiberina near Arezzo, Tuscany. His father, Ludovico, served as the town’s judicial administrator and podestà of Chiusi della Verna at the time of his birth. The Buonarroti family had been small-scale bankers in Florence for several generations, though the bank had failed. His mother, Francesca di Neri del Miniato di Siena, died in 1481 when Michelangelo was six years old. Following her death, he lived with a nanny and her husband, a stonecutter, in Settignano, where his father owned a marble quarry and small farm. There, the young boy developed his passion for working with marble.

Career and Achievements

In Florence, Michelangelo studied grammar under the Humanist Francesco da Urbino but showed little interest in formal schooling, instead copying paintings from churches and seeking out other painters. At age 13, in 1488, he was apprenticed to Domenico Ghirlandaio, a master in fresco painting, perspective, and figure drawing who ran Florence’s largest workshop. The following year, his father secured payment for Michelangelo as an artist—unusual for someone so young. When Lorenzo de’ Medici, de facto ruler of Florence, requested Ghirlandaio’s two best pupils in 1489, Ghirlandaio sent Michelangelo and Francesco Granacci.

From 1490 to 1492, Michelangelo attended the Platonic Academy, a Humanist academy founded by the Medicis, where his work and outlook were shaped by prominent philosophers and writers of the era. Born in Florence, Michelangelo was mostly active in Rome from his 30s onwards. His work drew inspiration from classical antiquity and exerted lasting influence on Western art. He succeeded Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as architect of St. Peter’s Basilica at age 71, transforming the plan so that the Western end and dome were finished to his design.

Notable Events and Milestones

Michelangelo achieved fame early, with the Pietà and David completed before he turned 30. Though he did not consider himself primarily a painter, he created the scenes from Genesis on the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment on its altar wall—two of the most influential frescoes in Western art history. His design of the Laurentian Library pioneered Mannerist architecture. The dome of St. Peter’s Basilica was completed after his death, with some modification to his design.

Awards and Honors

Michelangelo was the first Western artist whose biography was published during his lifetime. Giorgio Vasari’s Lives (1550) presented his work as the culmination of the revival of the arts and called him divino, an honorific then extended to several celebrated writers and artists. Ascanio Condivi’s Life (1553), prepared with Michelangelo’s participation, corrected Vasari in places, and Vasari incorporated much of it into his expanded edition of 1568. His contemporaries admired his terribilità—his ability to instill a sense of awe in viewers of his art.

Additional Resources

Michelangelo remains one of the best-documented artists of the 16th century, with surviving correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences providing extensive insight into his life and work. His creative abilities across multiple artistic disciplines define him as an archetypal Renaissance man, alongside his contemporary Leonardo da Vinci.
