Manoj Bajpayee Takes on the Role of Mahatma Gandhi in Sudhir Mishra’s Latest Film, Produced by Anubhav Sinha

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha and director Sudhir Mishra are set to collaborate on an intriguing new theatrical feature that delves into a lesser-known chapter of Mahatma Gandhi’s life. The film will star National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee in the role of Gandhi, marking his first portrayal of the iconic leader on screen. Joining him in a significant role is the talented Saurabh Shukla, adding depth to the ensemble cast.

A Unique Perspective on Gandhi’s Life

The film, directed by Sudhir Mishra and produced by Anubhav Sinha and Narendra Hirawat under Benaras Mediaworks, will be presented by NH Studioz. Set against the backdrop of India’s struggle for independence, the narrative focuses on a pivotal 21-day period in Gandhi’s life. According to the filmmakers, the story will explore the personal and political circumstances that led Gandhi to step away from Delhi, a city that was becoming the epicenter of political power at the time.

Director Sudhir Mishra elaborated on the film’s premise, stating, “This new film focuses on an important yet lesser-known chapter of history—the 21 days in the life of Mahatma Gandhi during India’s independence. At a time when the nation was stepping into freedom, and Delhi was becoming the centre of power, Gandhi made an unexpected choice: he chose to walk away. But by walking away, he did not retreat. He reinvented himself. While history books record the surface events of that era, this story explores what lay beneath that famous choice and will depict the personal journey of a leader redefining his path.”

A Significant Collaboration

This project marks a notable collaboration between Sinha and Mishra, both of whom have made significant contributions to Indian cinema. Sinha is recognized for his impactful films such as Mulk, Article 15, and Thappad, while Mishra is celebrated for his works including Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Dharavi, and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin. Mishra has received three National Film Awards for his films, showcasing his prowess in storytelling.

The film also signifies Mishra’s return to theatrical cinema after a lengthy hiatus. For Manoj Bajpayee, taking on the role of Gandhi adds another remarkable character to his illustrious career, which boasts several acclaimed performances and multiple National Awards. Saurabh Shukla, a well-respected figure in Hindi cinema, will join Bajpayee in this compelling ensemble. Further details regarding characterizations and additional cast members are yet to be revealed.

An Intimate Exploration of History

Produced by Anubhav Sinha and Narendra Hirawat, the film aims to present a more intimate perspective on the period surrounding India’s Independence. By focusing on a specific chapter in Gandhi’s life, the filmmakers hope to offer audiences a fresh understanding of the leader’s journey rather than covering his entire legacy.

The film is directed by Sudhir Mishra, featuring Manoj Bajpayee and Saurabh Shukla in key roles. It is produced under Benaras Mediaworks and presented by NH Studioz.
