Her father, Wills John Hughes Murdoch, was a civil servant, and her mother, Irene Alice Richardson, was a former opera singer. Iris Murdoch attended Badminton School in Bristol, England, before studying at Somerville College, Oxford. At Oxford, she studied classical philosophy, ancient history, and the classics, and she developed a deep interest in philosophy. Murdoch’s academic pursuits laid the foundation for her later career as a philosopher.
