International Self-Care Day: History, and Significance

OV Digital Desk

Each Year on 24 July, International Self-Care Day (ISD) provides an opportunity to highlight healthy lifestyle self-care programs around the world. ISD is a device developed by the International Self-Care Foundation to promote self-care as a foundation for good health. Since 2011, ISD has been running. Individuals and groups are provided with a media-friendly platform and a focus for promoting self-care in their organizations or communities (independently).

Health stakeholders are invited to use International Self-Care Day responsibly to advance healthy lifestyles and wellness. It is ISF’s pleasure to provide support to groups and organizations wishing to conduct public health programs by these objectives. Those undertaking public health programs linked to ISD are requested to provide a summary report for future reference and potential deployment abroad.

In recent years, self-care has become increasingly important as people realize the importance of putting themselves first. People have talked about it and are more interested in taking control of their health and wellness by prioritizing themselves because of this.

History ofย International Self-Care Day

International Self-Care Day, observed annually on July 24th, is a day dedicated to promoting the importance of self-care as a vital foundation of health. This day serves as a reminder that self-care should be an integral part of our daily lives, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The concept of self-care has been recognized by the medical community since the 1950s, but it was not until 2011 that the International Self-Care Foundation (ISF), a UK-based organization, established International Self-Care Day to raise awareness globally. The date, July 24th, was chosen symbolically to represent the 24/7 nature of self-care.

Over the years, International Self-Care Day has evolved to include a variety of themes and activities that encourage individuals to prioritize their health and well-being. From the promotion of healthy diets and exercise to the development of disease-prevention strategies, the day emphasizes the lifelong benefits of self-care.

The history of International Self-Care Day reflects a growing recognition of the need for individuals to take an active role in managing their health. It marks a shift from a purely medical model of health care to one that includes the individual’s role in maintaining their health.

Significance of International Self-Care Day

The Day serves as a focal point and an opportunity to promote healthy living self-care programs worldwide. Despite its long history, self-care has recently received a lot of attention due to its focus on wellness. A healthy diet, proper cleanliness, and disease-prevention strategies can all fall under this category. A significant amount of progress has been made in the availability and accessibility of novel self-care interventions, and the self-care movement continues to grow.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also recognizes the importance of self-care, having launched the first global Guideline on self-care interventions for health and well-being. This guideline marked a significant shift in health policy, linking communities, primary care, and health systems, and advocating for the inclusion of self-care interventions in health systems worldwide.

International Self-Care Day serves as a reminder that taking care of oneself is a continuous process that should be integrated into everyday life. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the various self-care practices that contribute to overall well-being, such as maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress, and seeking help for mental health issues when needed.
