Instagram Enhances AI Dubbing and Translation for Indian Languages

Meta Platforms has unveiled exciting new language tools for Instagram, Facebook, and the Edits app, aimed at empowering creators to produce content in a wider array of Indian languages. During the “House of Instagram” event held in Mumbai, the company announced the addition of Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil to its AI-driven dubbing and translation system for Reels. This initiative is designed to enhance accessibility and engagement for users across the diverse linguistic landscape of India.

AI Dubbing and Translation Updates

With this latest update, creators can now dub their Reels in five new Indian languages, expanding beyond the previous options of English, Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese. The AI Dubbing tool developed by Meta is capable of translating audio while synchronizing the translated speech with the original lip movements of the creator. This innovative system employs AI voice cloning technology to maintain a consistent voice across different languages, ensuring that the creator’s identity remains intact.

To enhance user experience, Instagram will label dubbed Reels with a “Translated with Meta AI” tag, allowing viewers to easily identify content that has been translated. Users also have the option to disable translations or revert to the original audio through their settings, providing flexibility in how they consume content. This feature aims to create a more immersive experience for viewers, making it easier for them to engage with content in their preferred language.

New Fonts for Local Scripts

In addition to language support, the Edits app is set to introduce new fonts that cater to various Indian writing scripts. This update, which will soon be available on Android, will include popular scripts such as Devanagari and Bengali-Assamese. By allowing creators to style captions and overlays in their native languages, the update aims to enhance the visual appeal of their content and better reflect the cultural nuances of their audience.

Moreover, the platform plans to localize its font list based on the device’s language settings, ensuring that users have access to more than 50 fonts tailored to their linguistic preferences. This move not only supports creators in expressing their ideas more authentically but also aligns with Meta’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive digital environment.
